It actually doesn't, which is to their credit. I thought they were insane to sign him, but now it looks like they (dare I say?) got a bargain.

That lineup is absolutely god awful!

And that's part of the problem with signing Nichushkin and MacKinnon. If they sign MacKinnon & not Nichushkin, they're not in trouble.
However, that isn't how you keep a dynasty going. You can have your top-end players like MacKinnon, Makar & Rantanen making top of the foodchain money, that's not a problem. You can't, however, have your middle of the line-up players making money. You need to have depth players over performing relative to their contracts.
Because of their cap situation, they have no hope if their top guys are out. Landeskog hasn't played a game all season, MacKinnon's out for a month, Nichushkin's missed a ton of games. They're in a bit of a pickle.

Its all about managing risk and understanding the player and team outlook
This is a good move just like locking up Suzuki or Stuzle
They are young and you have them locked up for their entire prime at reasonable money
Even if all plateau at 65-75 points still a good move
Inking 11 and 31 are totally stupid moves that were disasters from day 1
Stop it , one team was washed up and entering a full rebuild
The other lost superstars , Avs arent drafting Bedard

The 18 wheeler fell off the cliff a few years ago , the rebuild was upon us without the covid gift
