Leverage will do that. He's got the leverage, Tampa Bay still sees themselves as win-now, they don't have the assets/players to replace him if he walked, they had to sign him.

Tampa Bay's setting themselves up nicely to be mediocre for a long, long time, though. Hell, they got two Cups and multiple appearances, along with hella entertaining hockey for a decade? Well worth it.

Well... Yes and no.

Tanking to get Stamkos & Hedman, absolutely.

Tanking to get Brett Connolly and Jonathan Drouin? Not so much.
 
They're never going to be nearly bad enough to tank, not unless half their team gets injured for long periods of time.

Contract is fine and should be a 60-70 point player as his role gets bigger
 
The NHL is the only league in North America where the top-end players make less now than they did twenty years ago.

...Which is precisely what the owners wanted with a salary cap.

Al the top-end players, from McDavid to Matthews to Vasilevskiy to Karlsson, they should all be making twice as much. All four to them combined make less than Marcus Brown does in the NBA.

They'd make twice as much if the cap was twice as much. Proportionally I think they are making enough. Matthews makes about 16% of the cap. You can't build a winning team if one player makes 1/4 of the cap. Not even Mario Lemieux or Wayne Gretzky could win without a stacked team.

Not at all , generate NHL revenue like other leagues and players simply make more

Exactly , Edmonton would be decimated after 1 cup run

They need a 200 mil cap to pay their players

The NHL by far is the hardest league to manage your dollars , so you have to be smart navigating the cap

The cap is exactly what this league needs , it simply doesnt bring in the bucks like other leagues
