Around The League - 2024-25 Regular Season

Pegula got rid of his holding company controlling his sports business a few days ago

Cash out while its a hot market
So much for being a lifelong Sabres fan. People don't buy sports franchises because they love the sport or the team. They buy them to flip them for a profit down the road. This is why Quebec City getting another team would be a waste of time. Because the only way an owner could profit from selling the Nordiques v2.0 would be to sell to the highest bidder, who would inevitably want to move them to the US.

An instant classic take on the Matthews contract, and how it shows that:

1) Matthews isn't a team player
2) That Toronto isn't really a tough fan/media market but is just a fanboy market
3) That MLSE cares about optics, not about winning Cups

I said the same thing to my Leaf friends that MLSE got taken again on a second contract that no team ever went to

I have no issue with the money as star players always took a discount compared to other sports

However 34 needed to give the Leafs 6 years on this contract

Pasta 8x 11.25 , Nate 8x 12.60 worked their teams , Matthews was all about ME

well to coin a phrase, fuck the owners, gotta look out for yourself.

Teams can't force a player to sign for 8 years, it just turns out that most players also like the security of 8 years deals. Matthews has been one of the first players to favor shorter term deals. Players always have leverage. What was Toronto going to do? Let him walk? Pay him even more per year to sign him longer? Trade him?
