Around The League - 2024-25 Regular Season

3 1sts’ for a goalie?? No chance.
It's not three firsts (four if you count Bourgault) for a goalie.

It's three firsts, their top prospect for a goalie and to get out of one of the worst contracts in the NHL for a team vying for a championship. Hart on his own isn't worth that much, for sure. But for a team strapped for capspace and that needs to make a real run? They need to fix it.

If their goaltending doesn't improve, they might not even make the playoffs.

If they do nothing, they will lose McDavid and Leon eventually
I'd be shocked if Leon re-signs there, regardless of what Deadmonton does in the next two seasons.

I think he wants to have his own team and not be in McDavid's shadow.

San Jose allows 20 goals in 2 games. They are pulling a Chicago. They know it can pay off, can't blame them.

That's what disgusts me about the league. Its ridiculous that you can be rewarded for putting such a miserable product on the ice whether deliberate or not..

Still no chance. 5M isn’t the end of the world contract to bury, trade or buy out.

Then riddle me this: Why haven't they?

Because in the current NHL, when only 11 teams have more than $1M in capspace available, nobody's taking on that contract without massive incentives.

If you're Edmonton, you're a legit Cup contender with two future HHOFers in the middle of their prime, one of which who'll probably end his career in the shortlist of greatest players of all time, with 2 & 3 years left on their contracts, you're going to... wait? Because you can't buy Campbell out, that's too late. You can send him to the minors, but you still don't have a suitable replacement and the cap savings don't give them enough money to obtain a real replacement.

So the only option left is a trade. You could have a team like Chicago that could take on that contract, but you have to give 'em picks and you're not getting a goalie in return, not that Chicago has one worth trading for.

The only logical candidate would be Carter Hart & the Flyers.

If Deadmonton is insistant on keeping their probable late round firsts who are more likely than not netting them depth players so that they don't try going for it this year? Because the price is too steep? Then they deserve whatever ill-suited fate they end up getting.

Teams should be able to manage one bad contract. The buy out option for next year doesn’t look too bad. And I think Oilers problems goes further than goalies, therefore I’m not sure putting all their eggs in Hart being the savior would be smart. If they do that trade they don’t have a lot of currency left to solve their other problems.

I despise the type of play Brad Marchand made last night, slewfooting the Leaf defenceman. At the same time, I greatly admire the leader and player Marchand is, and somewhat admire and am in awe of his ability to get away with this or similar types of plays on seemingly every shift without anyone pounding the piss out of him. He's made a career of it, and no one can make him pay the price or do anything about it. Amazing.

I don't think Ryan Reaves jawing at Marchant from the bench is much of a deterrent. Maybe one way Marchand gets away with it is that he is well able to recognize gutless teams like the Leafs.
It was a hockey play.

Marchand has always been a douche bag. Hitting Sedin like a punching bag just because. Then licking that guys face, he should have been suspended for 40 games after that. My least favourite player,
Someone, anyone, could have put a stop to it but they let him get away with it because the league is full of pussies. Marchand is not a heavyweight. If he were playing 40 years ago Chris Nilan would have put him in a coma.

Ryan Reaves is what passes for a tough guy now. But the truth is he's a broken down has-been who scares nobody. He's a joke. A palooka.

That's what's so great about Wi-Fi, he can actually play the game at a reasonably high level... and he'll punch faces when called upon. I personally don't think fighting should still be a thing in hockey, but it is still a thing so it's nice to have a guy like that.

As long as it's a thing, it's an advantage to have a guy that can throw them while still be able to have a regular shift. Otherwise other teams start taking liberties, and refs don't always manage it well.

Usually, you don't like dmen being the fighter though as there are fewer of them so losing one for 5-17 minutes is not optimal. That said, he doesn't hurt the team with his fights so all has been good so far. Apparently his brother is a huge psycho headcase, a nice fourth liner for sure,,,

They could live with one bad contract, most teams figure out a way. Unfortunately, Campbell's not the only bad contract on that team. Darnell Nurse's contract is even worse and Deadmonton doesn't have the assets to ship him out, even if they wanted to. Those two combined for 17% of the cap, which is astounding.

Another issue: His contract's not the only bad thing. Campbell can't play. I don't even know if he's a backup in the NHL right now. It'd be one thing if he had a bad contract like Price, but Price was still a top tier goalie. You can't, however, live with that bad contract if he's the starting goaltender, he's playing like he's an AHLer and the backup's somehow even worse.

Deadmonton lost again to Vancouver - how the fuck is it November 7th and they've played three times already? And we don't play Toronto again until March? The NHL, man... not a serious league - and they're already running out of time. They'll probably fire the coach soon, which might give them a temporary boost. But in the end, Jack Campbell & Stuart Skinner are what they are·: Backup goalies at best.

I think Deadmonton only has one way out of this and that's my trade proposition. Get out of the Campbell contract and try your hand with Carter Hart, despite all the assets that will need to be given up. They might just be punting on the season otherwise.
