Around The League - 2024-25 Regular Season

It’s only matter of when for DJ Smith. It was said they were waiting for a new GM. But why? Appoint a caretaker and then let the GM install someone else.

Smith might be gonzo tomorrow.

But it's called a bump for a reason. Bumps are small and they don't last. Sooner or later (usually sooner) teams revert to the mean. By season's end we will likely see that aside from these bumps, all the teams will finish pretty much the same as they would have had they not changed coaches.

Jay Woodcroft got fired in Edmonton and while I don't think he's anything special I also don't believe that the Oilers' poor start had much, if anything, to do with how they were being coached nor do I think that he had "lost the room". The Oilers fired him because they couldn't do anything else and needed to be seen as doing something.

Different story in Montreal where Ducharme was the literal reason, not that we sucked (we sucked before and after him) but that guys like Suzuki and Caufield were being stunted in their development. Ducharme's approach (and, apparently, that of his GM) the season after the Cup run was that they were going to try and repeat it. So Ducharme quickly lost the room in his delusional pursuit of meaningless wins and his two best assets suffered for it.

But no coach has any impact on how well or badly a McDavid or a Draisaitl plays, and when they were slumping the team wasn't winning. That's not on the coach.

The “bump” has allowed Holland to not be taken to the cleaners and buys him time closer to trade deadline when supply is usually > than demand, thus lowering asking price

Hard to believe that’s the Devils we’re talking about. They’ve gone full 180 degrees.
Last year was a newbie surprise, league has adjusted.

NHL coaching is too sophisticated in this day & age - pousse caca only hockey will inevitably be game planned against… successful teams (TBay, Avs) had to add other dimensions to their game before being able to Win a Cup

NJD like Leafs, and Edm are built to only play pousse caca hockey

The Oilers are still 5 points out of a playoff spot and have now lost 2 in a row and both losses were hella bad in terms of how they lost them. The bump is over and the team is still on the outside looking in and their needs are exactly the same as before. They can try to pick up Antti Raanta who, like Jack Campbell, has already cleared waivers, or they can circle back to the Habs and offer up something real.

they can't win with them, who can they pick up that will put them over the hump, no one, tank tank tank

trade all vets for awesome returns, Hopkins might get them a 3rd, Kane some hookers/blow, McNopersonality, 5 firsts and Draisaitl a good German marching band
