Around The League - 2024-25 Regular Season

Meet the new boss...

Same as the old boss.
After an 8 game heater following the firing of Jay Woodcroft, the Oilers have now lost 3 straight and dropped to 7 points out of a playoff spot. The new coach bump is officially over. Skinner, despite the team in front of him outshooting the Isles handily, gave up 3 goals on 21 shots for a "stellar" .857 save percentage. They still need a goalie.

as you set out in the other thread, they have no chance to win so they should jettison the team and lose deliberately

Buffalo and Edmonton.

To tank and be successful you have to have both luck and a halfway competent managment team.
And desirable geographic location - all these so called successful tanking teams TBay, Chi, LAK, Avs, and VGK are “player desirable” locales.

How’s the great GM Stevie Ys rebuild going in hellhole Det? Lot harder to rebuild when not gifted two elite players + geographic market advantage I guess..

Cue Habs jumping Wings in standings w a win tonight

Location is the least of the factors

TB lucked out drafing their core a decade ago and have done nothing since

Thier players havent given them any discounts when your saving 10% on taxes

Yzerman needed 5 years unwinding the crap ( same as Hugo ) left behind

Team is night/day better now than when he took over

Drafting , big time luck, and sound management is what you need

Pastrnak, Marchand, Bergeron, Kucherov. Superstars. No tank involved. I like that model.

Vegas, St Louis have won recent Cups. No tank involved.

Not sure where I sit on the issue anymore.

No model is an exact science

One that fails 100% of the time is patching/bandaid/ kicking the can down the road especially when your not winning

The above mentioned are part of the big time luck factor

Regimes need to figure out where they sit in the NHL food chai and act accordingly

Too often kicking the can down the road all they can do trying to win

When your two best players are McDavid and Draisaitl you have a chance and you go for it. When your two best players are Suzuki and Caufield you need to punt for field position. Once 97 and 29 move on in 2 years then the Oilers should tank. Our window is not now so anything we do in pursuit of the playoffs is just fool's gold. If I'm GM of the Oilers I am moving whatever draft picks and prospects I need to in order to win today and it's rebuilding teams like the Habs who should be offering them the Monahan's, Anderson's, Savard's, Allen's and Dvorak's in return for those picks and prospects.

What about that thing called a salary cap?
