I'm not suggesting that all of those players should be traded to one team or that the Oilers should try to get all of them. But Edmonton needs to be willing to mortgage its future to try and win in the present. Nobody will care that they don't have a first round draft pick if they manage to hang a banner in the rafters. It's the price you have to be willing to pay in a salary cap world.

For most of those years there was no concerted effort on the part of ownership and management to try and go for it. That's only really been a thing for a couple of years. And since we pretty much know that they won't both be staying in Edmonton when their contracts expire (realistically both of them could leave) their window is from now until that day. After that the party is well and truly over. It would be criminal for the front office to do anything less, especially when this is the best chance they're likely to have for another generation.

maybe it is best for them to tank then if those guys are leaving,,,,

Just think, when McDavid goes to Toronto, that one two down the centre will dominate for 10 years

They aren't leaving for another year after this one. No need to blow it up early.

And McJebus isn't going to Toronto and the Leafs won't have the cap space anyhow because they'll have blown it all on another has-been enforcer like Reaves. He'll be playing in the US.

Oilers wont but should move Leon and CMD
 
TML has over 40M coming off the book in the next two years, plus the cap increase. So ~50M by the time McJeezus is a UFA.

That includes Tavares money, which surely won’t be resigned or extended with that kind of money.

They wont have enough cap , assuming no trades and projections

Willy 10.5
Matthews 13.25
Marner 11.5
Reilly 7.5

Assuming Woll improves he will get 4-5

They need 5 defenseman and 12 other players , CMD at 15 MIL is not going there IMO

Seriously? We’re talking about CMD. They will happily jettison one or more of those guys. This will be a corporate project.
