Around The League - 2024-25 Regular Season

The "Winning a Cup" argument will become less & less relevant to determine a player's greatness as the sport expands to more teams.

It used to be a real method to determine a player's greatness, to an extent, when there were 6 to 12 teams. But in modern day sports, where the leagues have made it harder for players to get paid what they're actually worth for teams to build sustainable teams with depth that can last for a long time, winning is incredibly hard.

Better metric should be, has McDavid performed up to his talent at the key times? And the answer to that, in my opinion, has unequivocally been yes.
of course it is but wehave uses lack of championships to shit on players/teams he dislikes so he can't give a pass to those he likes on the same standard.

I always love "gotta win championships!!!1" argument in team sports. It really does show me in those that argue it how limited their critical thinking is.

Some team sports an individual can have more impact (goalie in hockey, QB in football). Also nhl forwards only play about a third of the game. And are one of 6 ppl on the ice at that time.

while true, the same can be said about 34 in Toronto yet he gets it from Wehave for playoff failures. Either both 34 and 97 are losers or neither is

The only sport where it's more true than others is basketball because of how much impact an elite player can have on the outcome of the game.

During close to 50% of his career, the team that had LeBron James was a lock to make the finals. He was the best player in the league offensively, while being (at worst) an above average defender.

That's a cheat code. And even then, he's only 20% of the players on the court.

I have a room in my house with Habs memorabilia on the walls but what we're looking at in this photo is the epitome of overcompensation. I don't have nearly as much stuff on my walls and none of that crap like player figurines still in the box and nailed to the wall (wtf?)

And along the top of my wall I have 24 mini Stanley Cup banners. That's one thing I'm sure Mr. Dangle can only dream about while drowning his sorrows in a room full of overpriced trinkets.
