Around The League - 2024-25 Regular Season

if the boys are found not guilty what are chances all journalists like Westhead will say oops
He won't have to say "Oops" because being found not guilty doesn't make them innocent. Legal innocent isn't the same as actual innocence. Westhead has done his homework. He knows damn well they're guilty in terms of what actually took place.

If im a team owner I don't want a rapist on my team, even if his crime hasn't been proven to a legal standard in court. OJ was acquitted of murder in court but that didn't mean he was innocent. The legal machinations is just a parlor game. We know these players did it. They filmed it. Court proceedings at this point should be irrelevant as far as their employers are concerned. Their NHL careers are over no matter what a judge says.
she also said she consented iirc

a court will make that determination
And its determination will not be relevant to whether or not these players ever earn another NHL paycheck, nor should it be. The slippery slope is already there. It began with "It never happened" and has already morphed into "Well yeah, it happened, but she consented."

They did it. They know they did it and everyone else knows they did it. The court proceeding is irrelevant to their careers. Their careers are already over.

You are conflating two issues, guilt and employment. Employers are pussies now and are afraid of X.

You are also way too invested emotionally in this issue. Guilt, innocence, job no job, won't affect you in the least.

he doesn't know anymore than you as he wasn't there
Again you seem to think that legal technicalities matter. Everyone already knows that it's practically impossible to prove rape in court. That doesn't mean that everyone doesn't already know that the rape happened. A not guilty verdict will not save the career of any of the accused players because regardless of what happens in court everyone still knows they did it.

Hockey teams are corporate entities just like any other. If one of your clerks accused you of sexual assault and it got into the news media your actual guilt or innocence would be irrelevant. You'd be finished barring a complete retraction by the clerk and an admission that she lied. Even then you would be forever tainted by it. A hockey player is just a temporary employee when all is said and done. A player accused of rape, regardless of what happens in court, represents a problem that the corporation does not need and is very easy to make go away. The teams will do the corporate thing which is to say, the expedient thing. They will be made to go away.

But the good news is that they are, if not legally guilty, actually guilty. So whatever bad things happen to them is what they deserve and Westhead was 100% right.

You know what else won't affect me in the least? The disbanding of Hockey Canada or, at minimum, a refusal on the part of the federal government to permanently cut off their funding of Hockey Canada. But heaven forfend that the "stick to sports" people don't have that Canada VS Belarus game to watch on Boxing Day.

Hockey Canada is not just international hockey, it is also all hockey down to little tykes, it is the overseer for all provinces, rules about transfers between provinces etc.

You are not just hurting a few of the elite, you are also hurting the house guys who play at 9 years old because they love to play even if they will never make rep.

Hockey Canada also covers women's hockey, you want that to be cut off financially?

It isn't as simple as cutting off Canada v Belarus on Dec 26

Do you honestly think that amateur hockey will cease to exist if HC is destroyed? How did literally every single amateur player in Canada who started playing organized hockey prior to 1968 when HC was founded manage to survive?

It is far different now, that is like saying, why do you need a car, people in 1920 didn't.

If you were a hockey parent, you would understand. It has been a huge part of my life for the last 15 years and I will miss it when it is gone.

But you have no issue with the fact that a portion of the dues you paid to HC all those years went to a fund designed to sweep rapes under the carpet?

It also pays for insurance (and this was an insurance case) etc. I don't get to choose where my tax dollars are spent (like 10 million to Arar), how is that different?

A miniscule portion of hockey is bad but the press and X/webboards love to paint all hockey players with the same brush. I don't accept it and will defend hockey/hockey players/hockey parents.

Players as a mass group aren't the problem. The problem is the culture perpetuated by bodies like HC, who look the other way when players misbehave or give it a nudge and a wink. The players take their cues from the adults. This is why the entire rotten house needs to be bulldozed. The body rots from the head down.
