Around The League - 2024-25 Regular Season

Wrong

And why anyone would risk infecting our elders and put them through agonizing suffering is just extreme selfishness. These people are not even human in my book.
That's the bottom line. People don't give a shit about anyone but themselves and their own trivial desires. They don't care how many people have to die so long as they are not personally inconvenienced in any way. So they pretend that the concern expressed by civic leaders is overblown.

Without strict mandates, the pandemic would have been far more lethal. We escaped the worst of it in Canada because our federal government didn't mess around. They got medieval on people's asses when they flouted the rules, as well they should have. Were it up to me, I'd have punished non-compliance with jail time.

My sister in law got it long before the vaccine was developed and she damn near died. Six weeks on a ventilator in a coma. She survived but Covid probably shaved a decade off of her life expectancy. And even today, years later, she's still got a persistent cough and permanent respiratory damage.

But as long as Count can still go to Disney for the umpteenth time without having to wear a mask it's all good, right?

i won't argue that governments are generally more risk averse than pundits
It definitely would have required some balls to go against what most of the world was doing, which is why it was more a political decision than a data driven, citizen beneficial decision. Plus they kept moving the posts to where it quickly made no logical sense at all.

no argument there -- citizen beneficial decisions (how quaint) only occur when backed by political calculus. sadly.

Sweden did the same with better results than most of Europe.

only to reverse course later when covid hit them hard....with mixed results

Sweden has faced severe issues as a result of the COVID‐19 pandemic. Although Swedish authorities initially followed a disease control path that differed from many other countries, extensive restrictions were implemented at a later date.

Santis did a great job mandating that God send him over 300 days of warm sunshine during the covid years. #smartdude
You could sneer but Trudeau would have shut it down just like California. Weather had nothing to do with it. Zero.

It only ever didn't make sense to people looking for an excuse to disobey the mandates. What we learned is that the entire concept of civic duty or even just of community is dead. Everyone is just out for themselves and fuck the rest of the world now. The only way to get people to follow a rule in this day and age is to punish non-compliance with increasingly onerous punishments.

The entire Freedumb KKKlownvoy was the embodiment of white grievance culture. All supposedly about "freedom", just not the freedom of Ottawans to be able to sleep at night without constant air horns blaring or black diesel exhaust polluting the air. The homeless didn't even have the freedom to visit a soup kitchen because the freedumbers stole their food. These inbred hillbillies were allowed to use the Nation's Capital as their personal toilet for 3 weeks, all because they're too ignorant, stupid and selfish to get a jab and follow the rules. Fascist pigs, every last one of them.

Maybe. But the delta mutation, first identified in late 2020, was the most lethal and it struck just as vaccines were just trickling out. Nevertheless, Canada was able to bend the curve in the right direction in early 2021. But to say we knew precisely what was going on after a few months, without understanding the evolutionary track of the virus and the effectiveness of the vaccine seems a bit glib.

Also, Canada has ~40,000 less COVID deaths than Florida despite have 18M more people.

Fair, political pressures became too intense during the second wave. Still about a year less of severe restrictions.

Now compare elderly demographics. Florida has more than the entire country of Canada

In all fairness, it was a 100 year pandemic so society was a little out of practice. Part of me wants another one soon so we can see if we deal with it better this time. Okay, not really.
