Without strict mandates, the pandemic would have been far more lethal. We escaped the worst of it in Canada because our federal government didn't mess around. They got medieval on people's asses when they flouted the rules, as well they should have. Were it up to me, I'd have punished non-compliance with jail time.

My sister in law got it long before the vaccine was developed and she damn near died. Six weeks on a ventilator in a coma. She survived but Covid probably shaved a decade off of her life expectancy. And even today, years later, she's still got a persistent cough and permanent respiratory damage.

But as long as Count can still go to Disney for the umpteenth time without having to wear a mask it's all good, right?

We all feel badly for wehave's sil but the strict mandates didn't prevent her from being ill. No matter what we did would make no difference.

I do note though thst despite your belief in science, you don't a wear a mask, you go to big events etc.

Don't you also feel guilty for not going to your parents those years you didn't? I know I would.

Proportionally more 75+, yes, but not in absolute terms. And the proportions gap narrows sharply from if you go to 65+ (in which case Canada has far more in absolute terms.)

Demographics explains part of the difference, but it’s not nearly enough to explain the whole difference.

I don't need to mask because I've been quintuple vaxxed. And the reason I didn't visit my parents was because my father absolutely forbade me to visit while the mandates were in place.

As for Sweden, they ended up having to backtrack when their original plan of pretending that Covid wasn't a big deal was resulting in death.

And Florida simply stopped reporting Covid numbers so we'll never know for sure how many people died due to the combination of their own ignorance and Ron DeSantis' hubris.

That's odd, because Canada is perennially at or near the top of best countries to live in since he's been PM. His tenure has been successful and he's going to be your daddy for another 4 years once he fits Pee-Pee for a clown suit just like he did to Harper, Scheer, and O'Toole. Canada is not the United States. Aside from Alberta we tend not to embrace fascism.

Canada is pretty stagnant

Most of the problems that were around two decades ago -- unaffordable housing, low productivity, lack of high speed railways, turning high skilled immigrants into Uber drivers, etc are all still here
