Around The League - 2024-25 Regular Season

It’s annoying but it’s been good for the league.

However it’s pretty telling that no Canadian teams won the Cup ever since UFAs were introduced in the NHL.
As long as one of those Canadian teams that never wins is the Leafs then the system is working just fine. Besides, the Habs haven't won not because of these rules but because of incompetent management, coaching, and scouting.

paying over 50% is theft
No, it's "noblesse oblige". Back in the days when the US actually built things, the time when the country was the land of plenty that all these Trump idiots get misty-eyed over, the top marginal tax rate was 91%. Today Biden wants corporations to pay 28% and he gets labelled as a literal communist. These players would be making minimum wage pumping gas for a living if they couldn't play hockey. They can damn well pay their fair share. The more you make, the more you pay. It's not theft, it's how we pay for nice things like infrastructure, healthcare, education and a half hundred other things we never stop to think about.

Taxing someone making $40K at 50% is theft. On someone making $4 million or $40 million? That's called fairness. If you earn $4 million and keep $2 million of it, congratulations. You're still filthy rich and have more money in your pocket than at least 95% of the population. You don't deserve a telethon.

back then you got stuff for your money, highways, roads, airports, and armies to fight commies

now for that tax we get PMs virtue signalling, spending millions on on bullshit

why should I work my tail off, pay 50% so that others sit in food court all day playing Keno on my dime?

I pay $ to have a govt tell me I'm at fault for all of the world's problems as a cis white male.

You're becoming an angry old white guy yelling at clouds. Your cis white privilege is showing. Ask yourself: if these people sitting in the food court have it so easy, would you want to trade places with them? I doubt it. If you want to get angry at freeloaders, start at the top with all those corpoRAT entities like Loblaws who use inflation as a cover for their price gouging. Government isn't your problem. So-called "wokeness" isn't your problem. Corporate greed and the bought and paid for crypto-fascist politicians they own are yours and everyone's problem.

The answer to those problems is the crippling and punitive taxation of corporations who hoard wealth. Properly taxed, these corporations will have no choice but to plow their profits into better employee remuneration, research and development, and other things that can shelter them from taxes. When they aren't properly taxed, they use their excess profits on stock buy-backs to increase share price, they buy more private jets, and, most of all, they buy lobbyists and politicians. A lot less brutal capitalism for the poor and a lot less socialism for the rich is what we need.

Bingo , 40 fucken trillion is stashed in safe havens and nobody pays a dime in tax

The uber rich pay fuck all and the working class have to adsorb all the BS ...pay for government waste and then get laid off when Bell and others decide to hoard Covid funds and fire staff

Its all rigged for the rich and nobody gets punished because the laws are made by them for them and their cronies

Cant go to jail when Sir Judge has his money parked overseas

I will admit there is a delicious irony to the fact the tax you all more poster moved to the lowest taxed province in Canada so he could afford a house and where there is no provincial sales tax thereby saving 7% on everything he buys.

Patrick Roy will lead the Islanders into the playoffs, won't he? I'll always wonder what would have happened if we gave him the keys years ago, instead of hiring retread coaches and the likes of Bergevin. I think he might have pulled it off with one of those teams that had Markov, PK,Price etc.

Small mindedness got in the way.

Those things are happy accidents. I moved primarily to please my wife, who is from here. And when I moved the fascists had not yet come back into power.

We would have had non-stop drama, the rebuild would have been kicked down the road while we kept patching to try and be a playoff team. We would still have no Cups and probably also wouldn't have Slafkovsky either. But a certain segment of the fan and media base, the ones with personal agendas that have nothing to do with winning, would be happy.

In short, who gives a shit if Roy leads the Islanders to a wild card? The Isles aren't winning anything this season no matter where they finish.

btw that punishing tax you want imposed on corps will get passed on to you...
Why didn't this happen back in the Golden Era of the 1950's when the marginal tax rate was over 90% then? If a company wants to sell stuff it has to sell it at a price the market will bear. And when corporations get heavily taxed they need to do things other than stock buy-backs to retain their profits. They are forced to spend wealth to create wealth. Buying private jets for the C-suite because you pay no corporate taxes doesn't create wealth. Spending your profits on giving your workers more money on their paycheque creates a tax savings for the corporation and creates more wealth and more purchasing power for the middle class consumers to whom you are trying to sell your products.

If the theory that corporations merely pass on the taxes they pay to the consumer ad infinitum were true, then the middle class as we know it would have disappeared 70 years ago. But that didn't happen. In fact, the exact opposite happened and those who were alive to enjoy it (i.e. the same fucking boomers who now try to deny people all the things that were virtually handed to them on a silver platter) benefitted immeasurably. The only difference between then and now is that CEO's back then, while still filthy rich, were only perhaps 100 times richer than the average employee who worked for them instead of the 1000 times richer like they are today. Income inequality is worse today than it was in the Gilded Age of the robber barons. So this narrative about how taxing the rich will only hurt the poor is and always has been just a lot of hooey. (Or "malarkey", as Dark Brandon calls it)

Your anger issues about not being able to hoard your wealth are yours alone to deal with, I'm afraid.
