Around The League - 2024-25 Regular Season

Oh so BERKSHIRE is the one who shit on Hyman for having rich parents! Yeah I caught a bit of this discussion on Edmonton sports radio yesterday but I never caught the name of the person they were talking about. I wish I could say that it's the dumbest thing Berkshire's ever said but he'll say something even dumber tomorrow.

To refute his bogus argument, all one needs to do is reference Count's son, the soon-to-be recipient of the Victoria Cross (posthumous, of course, but I digress) Now I don't know how rich Hyman's parents are, but Count isn't exactly poor and when it came to hockey, he spared no expense to give his son the best possible chance to succeed and in the process tens of thousands of dollars which could have been spent on lowering carbon emissions went instead to the personal skills development of Count Jr.

And by all accounts, Junior turned out to be a pretty good player among his peer group. He played with an against kids who have gone on to be drafted by and in some cases playing for NHL teams. But as much money as Count spent, he couldn't make his kid taller, or faster, or skilled enough to be an NHL caliber player because there are some things that money cannot buy. You can coach a kid to master the skills but you can't buy him talent and you can't coach him to have talent. You can't coach a kid who's 5'9" into being 6'2". These are not things that can be affected by throwing money at them. So the fact that Hyman had wealthy parents is very much incidental to what he has done in hockey. They helped, but he was born with the talent and was able to master the skills and marry them with that talent through his own hard work.

Lots of minor hockey players have parents with financial means. They are no more able to succeed than any other kid. Trump has a daughter who is somewhat clever, and two sons who are fucking morons. Fortunately for them, they don't rely on any actual talent so the fact that they were born rich and privileged is what will probably keep them out of prison. But if their freedom hinged on being able to do 100 pull-up's, all the money in the world wouldn't save them.

Berkshire comes off looking like a jealous dope at best. At worst he makes you wonder if it isn't Hyman in particular but "rich Jews" in general with whom he has an issue.

He mixed in his personal political views with Hyman not deserving praise for hitting 50G due to his socio economic background
I'm wondering if that hot take (like a steaming pile of shit) is going to affect his future earning potential. He has a regular gig on the Hockey Inside Out podcast which is run by the Gazette and last time I checked, the Gazoo had a lot of subscribers in Cote St. Luc, Hampstead, Westmount, TMR, Outremont, and Chomedey who may not take kindly to the stink on that take.

Jesus, I just checked Berkshire's X feed. He actually posted an 8 minute video "mansplaining" the previous video, complete with a hand-drawn graph. He's so fucking stupid he thinks this will help. All it's actually doing is getting his ass ratio'd to the stratosphere.

Jr is not 5'9 but about 5'11. Still, Wehave's point is not a bad one. There are advantages some have, born the right time of the year, grow younger, be in an area with the right organization, get on the right spring team early on etc. Still doesn't offset compete level, desire and skill level.

Mine never played to make the NHL although every player who does wants to do so. He played with some very good players, but was always just one rank below them. He started a little later than some (5.5 years old) and did not get really good until 12-14 but by then, the good players had been to the Pee Wee tournament, started being scouted etc. I remember a tournament in Regina where he was one of the best on his team but the scouts were only looking at three players on our team (all had been to Quebec the year before). One is in the WHL and was drafted.

I wouldn't change a thing but he didn't have the same desire as say a guy like Hyman or McNopersonality to be on the ice 10 hours a day. He had to play his video game etc. Contessa also insisted he put in an effort at school whereas some of the hockey guys he knows who moved on were borderline DD.

The point being, money had little to do with any of it, one way or the other. Berkshire comes off borderline anti-Semitic and his jealousy is off the charts. He reminds me of that guy you see in the pub who goes on and on about how he "coulda played in the NHL" but he "insert lame, unverifiable excuse here" (blew out a knee, had to quit to support the family, got a chick knocked up, coach had a vendetta against me, yada, yada, yada)

Borderline? Did he make the same comments / references to Seth Jones or Jeff Petry…. u know the kids of Millionnaire pro athletes who I’m sure had “access & privileges”…

To my knowledge he never had a problem with athletes being rich until it was Hyman. I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt by saying "borderline" as I've never seen him say anything suspicious before. He says stupid shit pretty much daily, but this is the first time it seems "personal" to him and the first time where I sense an agenda on his part. But I know nothing about his private life or his personal political beliefs.

oh for sure, old Berkshire is broke, unemployed and hates many with money, he is also a huge Palestinian supporter, so that all factored in
