Around The League - 2024-25 Regular Season

To my knowledge he never had a problem with athletes being rich until it was Hyman. I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt by saying "borderline" as I've never seen him say anything suspicious before. He says stupid shit pretty much daily, but this is the first time it seems "personal" to him and the first time where I sense an agenda on his part. But I know nothing about his private life or his personal political beliefs.
Hyman does come from money but what I hear wasnt a spoiled brat who got everything handed to him

We worked his ass off to get to this level , overcoming one obstacle after another

5th round pick and at 24 finally made the NHL

Works hard , character player and doesnt take a night off

Great accomplishment to get to 50 goals , one of the most underrated players in the league

He either hates Jews or the hyman family
He, like many in this day and age, show their antisemitism in the form of "Free Palestine"-esque tweets, like people aren't smart enough to read between the lines.

I haven't read/watched what Dumbfuck McGee has to say. I think I'd rather get colon cancer.

Like, the majority of players from Canada/America who make the NHL come from (at the very least) middle to slightly upper class families. Saying otherwise is just not understanding the unfortunate reality of the sport. There was a story about Mitch Marner's dad spending insane amounts of money for personal coaching when Mitch was young.

But the notion that Hyman just got to 50 goals only because he's rich is such a laughable claim. Like it only took money for him to make the NHL, not that he worked his fucking ass off and chose to sign in the best possible spot for himself.

I had never heard of this Berkshire until now, and I regret that I now have. The whole thing is embarrassing and absurd. What cringeworthy nonsense.

He’s been an annoying, preachy advanced stats “guru” for about a decade. He’s beyond condescending. Nothing wrong with his adherence to advanced stats but his presentation and persona are nauseating.

For a guy who uses advanced stats he sure has a poor grasp of simple probabilities. As in, what are the chances that any given elite minor hockey player will ever get a sniff of the show, let alone score 50 freakin’ goals in a season.

Good grief. It’s plainly stupid.

That and that most NHL players do not come from poor backgrounds. The cost to play the sport is ridiculous.

It was quite amusing how he lost his marbles over Diaz for Weise deal as being amongst the worst trades in the previous decade based on analytics…..

Ooooops!

The perfect rebuttal to Berkshire's thesis is that Hyman has a brother who grew up with the same advantages he did yet only Zach made it to the NHL. How come? Shouldn't both brothers be high scoring NHLers like the Mahovlich brothers?

Local Edmonton sports radio was having a field day with the story yesterday. One host who knows of Berkshire asked rhetorically why he has trouble holding down a steady gig in the media and suggested that it might have something to do with his shitty takes combined with his shitty attitude.

Berkshire opened his original tweet with "We in the media have a responsibility..." which I thought was pretty presumptuous of him. He may not believe it but he isn't "the media". He's just a schlub who occasionally manages to get an article posted on a legitimate sports website, usually because of his reputation as some sort of stats geek. His somewhat steady job is working for an online gambling site. But the stuff he puts out into the ether is not informative nor insightful, mostly because he A) knows nothing, and B) has no inside knowledge of anything. He isn't a reporter like Stu Cowan. He isn't a "hockey insider" like Friedman or Dreger who have contacts inside the teams and the league. And he isn't a media member except very peripherally.

For me, the line between a legitimate "journalist/reporter/media pundit" and a "loser with a YouTube channel or a podcast emanating from his mom's basement" is a simple one: access. Stu Cowan can go to any game at the Bell Centre for free. He has a press pass. It allows him to eat at the Jacques Beauchamp media lounge before the game, he has a reserved spot in the press box from which he can write and file his articles, and if he wants to interview a player his press pass gets him into the dressing room and the room where the press conferences take place. He is a real journalist so he has real access. By contrast, if Berkshire wants to go to the Bell Centre, the only way he's getting in the door is with a ticket and he will only have as much access as any random fan because, as far as anyone who matters is concerned, that's all he is.

My son had two players on his team who’s fathers flew them in on their private jet for games - one from Texas, the other from Cali.

But like you stated… it’s the reality of the sport, even more so with youth hockey really taking off in the US, and some kids from non traditional markets looking for elite level team to play for who are almost exclusively in Northeast or Minny

“Elite Hockey Academies” are popping up all over the place …. major ca$h grab in the works.

Even traditional stalwarts like Shattuck St.Marys don’t want to be left out of the $$$ hunt, and have introduced on-line membership

we played a team from Dallas once whose dads got together to pay a coach 100000 a year to move to Dallas from Toronto to coach them as they wanted a Canadian coach

It is a rich kid's sport in Canada but even more so in the US
