Around The League - 2024-25 Regular Season

you are entitled to be wrong and you are
The cap exists to punish teams that do stupid shit. I for one am happy that teams like the Leafs and Rangers can no longer use their financial advantages (advantages that are mostly a matter of where they are located rather than anything merit based) to just throw money at their mistakes, driving up costs for smaller market teams that can't afford to compete. I want those franchises punished.

Without the cap, who knows how many Cups the Leafs could have bought by now? But thanks to the cap they've been forced to get by on their wits and they keep hiring halfwits. It's perfect just the way it is. If we had got the cap a decade earlier the Nordiques and Whalers would still be in Quebec and Hartford where they belong.

and we haven't won in the cap era either, now if your preference is the Leafs not winning than our winning, fine, but the cap has not benefited us in the least

I wouldn't go that far given the incredible cost and investment of drafting and developing players in the NHL, but I would relax the compensation a bit.

Because honestly if every player is a UFA after their entry level contract (assuming there is still one) I would trade every single one of my draft picks every year and just sign players.
There'd be a limit due to the salary cap, but yeah you could. And honestly, would that even be a problem? Give teams real options on how to build teams.

The best way to make the NHL more interesting overnight is to give the fans what they want: Trades and real free agency for players in their primes.

The two best UFAs this summer are 28 year old wingers asking for 7 years @ $11M annually. While Rantonen and Marner are still really good, they're at the end of their primes and giving them a contract where 70% of it will be while they're in their 30s. It's a loony system.

Yeah I know. I'll counter with two separate proposals based on your idea.

1) Just eliminate the draft and just do free agency. Teams can use any of their 50 contracts to sign prospects, and it would counts against the cap as usual, with the usual 1.15M deduction for players in the minors. This allows teams not currently contending to spend more on quality prospects. The downside is that teams like Winnipeg would have an harder time getting players but overall, it's pretty fair.

2) Keep the draft but all players are restricted only until the age of 25, no more entry level contracts. Eliminate the 4 1st round picks level so that the most compensation is 2 1st, a second and a third, and allow teams to use acquired picks as compensation. One of the main issue with the current compensation is that it unfairly benefits good teams since the quality of their picks is less. It's really prohibitive for bad teams to offer sheet players since they have to give up lottery picks instead of low first round picks.

It would be abused by agents and would throw the whole league salary structure in a destructive spin
Exactly , let’s give Hutson stupid money cause you know it doesn’t count

Totally ridiculous fix for the league

The league only needs some tweaks with length of contracts , trade clauses , and buyouts as you say

I would also extend the ELC to 4 years with last year a salary guarantee option and keep the performance bonuses

The main thing you need to fix the system is common fucken sense when you had out contracts

That’s the problem with long term deals in this league and going into the third contract

Term should be 5 years , so now your extending stars at 25-26 going to early 30’s , very manageable.

It hasn't benefitted us because like the Leafs, we hired nitwits to manage, scout, and coach. But that's over now because we finally have competent people in charge. The Leafs are still hiring nitwits.

other than your main criteria for competency being their "langage", on what basis can you claim they are competentM
