Like any US team in a bullshit hockey market like NC, the Canes don't have the luxury of going for broke, falling short, and then living in cap hell for 5 years. They need bums in seats every year so they need to maintain a level of two notches above mediocre. That means they can't blow their brains out trying to get from the second round to the third. They need to guarantee a playoff spot every season.
