Around The League - 2024-25 Regular Season

I think Bettman wants him to go to Arizona and what the evil dwarf wants, he gets. To stay in Toronto, he will demand 15 million, affordable for them but if they aren't winning with him, why would he stay? It is interesting because part of me agrees with you and Nova that he won't leave but he doesn't seem to be a pussy like McDavid who signed long term. He seems more NBA like and says, fuck you, pay me or I go. No NBA star would have stayed in Edmonton and most leave Toronto when they can too.
Why is McDavid a pussy for staying? Sorry I just don't get that one.

I think it's all but certain that Matthews stays in Toronto. They'll pay him whatever the hell he wants, for however long he wants. He wants $15M x 8? He'll get $15M x 8.

However, and this is the only caveat, if Toronto can't re-sign him this upcoming summer? They have to trade him. Negotiations for this next contract shouldn't be difficult. They're the wealthiest franchise in the league and they could pay everything minus the league minimum in signing bonus for as long as Matthews wants. But if they can't...

But why couldn't they? Its a bit of a pig in a poke here. I also think Matthews stays so why wouldn't he sign if that's the case

If McDavid played in the NBA he would have gone to the owner (or the media) and demanded a trade at least 2 years ago. But "good Canadian kids" like McJebus don't pull those power moves. They have humility drummed into them at an early age.

Only if Matthews wants to leave.

If he wants to leave, no amount of money will do it as he will receive the same amount in [insert his preferred destination here].

That's why there's a caveat.

Exactly , he will do what he wants to do

I honestly don't know why Leafs fans would worry that they can't live without 34. It's not like he's led them to anything. For all the goals he's scored it hasn't moved the needle one inch in any game that mattered. He scores a lot of goals overall, but not enough when it counts. And he eats up a humongous amount of cap space. They'd be better off in the long run to get rid of him for a huge return.

NBA is a different league , owners gave the keys of their business to the inmates

Leafs will always be capped fucked as long as 5 players eat half your cap

99 says hello.. I don't think that staying in Edmonton makes him a "pussy".
In Gretzky's day, players had no power and went where they were told. That's pretty much how Canadian teams outside of Montreal and Toronto were able to thrive at all. Once players got the hammer and the Canadian dollar nosedived that was it. It's not for no good reason why there hasn't been a Canadian team winning the Cup since 1993. The only reason Canadian teams today have any access to elite talent is because of the salary cap. Failing that 4 of the 7 Canadian teams would go out of business or have to relocate south of the border. Any that remained would not have any superstars unless they drafted them and they could never afford to hang on to them once they became stars.

Because both the players and the owners know who makes the wheels go round. It's not the owners. No players, no fans, no NBA. Basketball players aren't just happy to be there. They know they have the power to make or break the league and they know that the league also knows that they have the power. So when a star player says to his team owner that he would "prefer" to be coached by someone else than the current coach, the current coach gets fired because coaches don't sell tickets.

Hockey players could do likewise if they weren't so collectively stupid.
