Around The League: Playoffs 2026

Lidstrom is the new standard

Lidstrom is top 5 all time in most people's rankings......after Orr, it's a toss-up, everyone has different opinions....

my top 4 includes : Orr, Lidstorm, Harvey, Bourque...then if i had to pick a 5th, it's a toss-up between Potvin, Robinson, Coffee....

Serge Savard without his knee injury would probably have been able to make top 3 all time....but his injury prevented that (he still won all those cups and is HOF)

You are better than that Mr Ulysse Nardin. If 5'9 Bedard can succeed, so could 99
99 never had the elite speed....he looked fast because he was always at the right spot at the right time

Don't get me wrong, he'd still be a star....just not as good as 66 would be today....even Beliveau would probably be better than 99 in today's NHL (if they all had similar diets, workouts regimen, equipment, etc)

Yet as he said, he never lost a race for the puck

66 would still be the best today.....big, fluid skater, amazing hands.....

99 would be the one in trouble today
I agree but you cant compare stars from then and now for GOAT debates

Goaltending is elite today and the cap would crucify teams

But you can compare how stars dominated vs the other stars of their era.
Sure but point totals etc.....is a pointless exercise

CMD is the most gifted player of all time and he sniffed 150 points one in a decade and will never do it again

Nobody is putting up those crazy numbers of decades ago now

Yeah can’t compare points total, got to adjust per era. Like i said i like to look at how those players were dominating versus the other players of their era. 99 was so far above everyone it was ridiculous, up until Lemieux came along. Orr was dominating everyone in the league. McDavid is in the same category.

Goaltenders are taller than the 70's and 80's , players are also in better shape, you also have to take into consideration the difference in equipment for goalies and players. Give 99 the skates and sticks of this era and he still on top of the league..

99 would never be in trouble at any era.
A few old timers mentioned on a podcast that 99 would have been carved in the 50-60s when you had to defend yourself like Richard and others

I forget the D`s name but he said 99 makes that spin move around the net once , the second time he is in the fourth row trying to find his teeth

Its a pointless exercise comparing eras

Old timers always say that the new guys wouldn’t be able to hang out with them back then. It’s a thing.

It’s not like there wasn’t plenty of knuckleheads in his time that weren’t trying to nail him.

There has been a lot of changes in equipment, those old goalie pads use to take on water and by the 3rd period they were heavier than at the start.. the pads today are so light and stay that way.. the player sticks have so much flex in them that the shot speed and heaviness of the shot is much greater.. the skates, the padding etc..
