Canes Name Bill Peters as New Head Coach

So much for "an experienced NHL coach". Now, who replaces Daniels? He's as big a part of the problem as any of the Canes previous coaches.

Summary of what I know about Bill Peters ... hint, it ain't much.

I know he won a Memorial Cup with a loaded Spokane team

I know he was AHL coach in the Blackhawks system when they developed a bunch of the younger guys on their current roster.

I know he's been in Detroit on Babcock's staff for a couple of years.

Done.

Oh ... and so much for what we and the media know. I'm not sure I ever even saw a mention of Peters as a guy who had an interview.

Ronnie's got quality subterfuge skills. He always was good with the dead leg deke.

So, if he's so good at developing players, why isn't he coaching the cherkers?
Oh, my old age caused me to forget the canes role in life. It's to be the AAAA farm team for the pens.
The canes are obviously more interested in youth development than winning.

How in hell is he gonna handle staal the elder? He's the ine that needs motivating, the type done with a cattle prod.

I maybe wrong but I do think he is the wrong coach for this team.
I feel he is in the mold of the canes last coach.

If I'm wrong come mid season I'll admit I'm wrong.

If we're going with a coach without NHL head coaching experience, I suppose we could do a lot worse than a Babcock disciple.

It'll be an interesting presser Friday. Don't know that many had Peters on the radar at all.

And he's worked for Babcock twice, his most recent role and as an assistant in Spokane.

Will Ulf come to Raleigh as an assistant?

I doubt it. Unless Ulf is getting a promotion to Associate Head Coach or something like that, it's not worth his while. Also, unless Peters was really desperate for a HC spot, he's going to want to be able to name his own assistants instead of being stuck with the GMs bestie. However, having said that, I wonder if we'll find out tomorrow how Brindy fits into the bigger picture.

Word on another Canes board was that RF said on 99.9 that Brindy will be an assistant coach of some capacity and that Peteres concurs.

For better or worse, a move that fits the budget. We won't ever see the Canes overspend on a coach. The big names want the big cash.

Very impressive bio.

I'm good with this hire. Much better than the Ulf/Dineen rumors. Lots of subtle details in that bio say "winner".

And I'm beginning to believe that Ron Frickin' Francis himself has taken on Eric Staal as a personal project in a make-or-break season right before extension or trade decisions are made. And I can think of no better person for the intervention than his first road roommate when Eric broke into the league and stall-mate for all those seasons.

That lets Coach Peters focus on the team while Ron flashes the spurs. This may well be a season when Eric earns that big paycheck.

I'm encouraged.

He has no choice but to put the spurs into Staal since no other club wants that contract. Ward's as well. Hell, Jordan's contract isn't looking too swell either.

Ron has his work cut out for him. It should be an interesting few weeks.

It was a stealth hire-- never, ever heard his name mentioned for this job or any others. I'll take the fact that he worked with Babcock twice, comes out of the west and has progressed through the ranks and comes from outside the family-- no Ulf, no Kevin 11, no JD-- no doubt RF did his due diligence.
