GDT #16: 2024/11/9 HNIC - another shit team's stanley cup

After adding two dmen that can move the puck better - and now Timmins as a third one. I can’t believe we are still playing this low event 5 on 5 brand.

We've changed to a zone defense from a hybrid zone / man on man defense under Keefe. It suits bigger defensemen, they don't have to travel as far. St Louis used it in their last cup run. Edmonton used it last year after their coaching change. Florida was a hybrid. It is harder to learn a hybrid system and who to cover under what situation.

I was at the game last night. Leafs played very well overall.

Willy and Marner were just so impressive in person. They are just on another level. Marner even threw a nice body check.

Robertson, Holmberg and McMann were totally invisible.

Knies is going to be a good one. Timmins moves the puck very well.

Tanev, McCabe, Larsson all looked solid.

Domi was cheap shotted so many times right in front of the refs and nothing. He was really hurting at times on the bench.

Reeves is as usless as he looks on TV. I legit think he does not know how to stop. He just slams himself into the boards to stop. He has no value what so ever.

Woll had little to do for more than half the game but stood tall when needed.

Montreal was a whole lot of nothing.

The habs have some pieces to build from (Suzuki, Hutson, Caulfield etc.) They just never stripped it down to the bones. Anderson I would bet still has value to some GMs at $3MM for the next 2.5 seasons.

Gallys start to this season could make a desperate GM eat the rest of his contract with some retention. Savard would have value in the last year of his deal and Matheson would fetch a good return.

Let slaf/caulfield/suzuki/dach lead the team until more pieces come into play and have cap space

Their problem is that even if they move the rest of those veterans, their young core doesn't look good enough to get them very far. Is there a contender level 1st line/top pairing player on the team? Suzuki looks like a good 2C, Caufield like a Debrincat type PP monster. Slaf ma7ybe? his P/60 production is pretty pedestrian but he's young enough to grow into a legit producer. Demidov is putting up a nice D+1 season in Russia so maybe he's that guy.

They might just be better off detonating this summer. By the time they're good enough to compete Suzuki is going to be 30. It's a very Dylan Larkinish situation there.
