GDT #28: 2024/12/10 - Leafs v Keefes

Funny how the NHL works.

Devils have had nothing but positive media from preseason on, viewed as a stacked young club and Keefe as an instant Adams favorite despite being laughed out of Toronto.

Leafs have been viewed as a team going backwards, stale and flawed, and Berube of course not mentioned in any Adams talks.

And here we sit 1/3 of the way through the year, with the two teams neck and neck in the standings despite the Leafs being ravaged with injuries while the Devils have had near perfect health, with the Leafs even being the hotter team recently......and yet, no change in the narratives.

Everyone still thinks the Devils are a sucess story, while the Leafs are on the verge of disaster.

Funny.

Anyways, feels like a bit of a big game. Sounds like Domi is back but still missing McCabe and McMann. McCabe's absence is particularly big. We need him back.

I think the Devils lines are right but i'm guessing at the Leafs lines. They could look much different:

If you guys would just read this board, you'd know this is one of the worst teams ever and probably not gonna make the playoffs.

I think its partly because it feels like we're overperforming due to elite goaltending this year. And while I'm definitely not complaining - it's nice to finally have great goaltending - it doesn't feel like our skaters have been dominant by any stretch. Same problems with secondary scoring. Same issues with showing up vs. garbage teams.

If I felt like they were making any progress in those same old issues that we've been talking about for oh, 5 years now, I would be a lot more excited.

And goalies are assholes. So I would love for the skaters to start showing they'll pick up the slack when our goaltending inevitably comes back to earth a bit.

2023-24 (NHL Rank)
Leafs - 52.35% xGF (9th), 2.88 xG/60 (6th), 2.62 (16th)
Devils - 51.8% xGF (11th), 2.89 xG/60 (5th), 2.69 (20th)

2024-25

Devils - 55.84% xGF (3rd), 2.86 (4th), 2.27 (6th)

The narrative is unfortunately right.

2023-24 (NHL Rank)
Leafs - 24.0% PP (7th), 76.9% PK (23rd)
Devils - 22.5% PP(13th), 80.7% PK (10th)

Devils - 32.6% PP (1st), 80.5% PK (11th)

why should the Leafs and Devils have a similar narrative surrounding them, exactly...?
