The Canes close out the year in Columbus.

This is the 82nd game of the calendar year. Through the first 81 games, the Canes lead the league in points percentage at .691, just ahead of Winnipeg at .688. Ty Smith looks to be around for a while longer, Ghost is out more than day to day. And Drury was placed on IR to make room on the roster for Riley Stillman. I would guess that Kochetkov goes in goal tonight.

Columbus comes in with 36 points in 37 games and 3-4-3 in their last 10. The were shut out by the Bruins on Saturday. Kiril Marchenko leads with 14 goals, he had a 3 game goal streak stopped on Saturday. He’s 2 points off his career high set last season. Zach Werenski has 28 assists, 2 more than Marchenko. He has 11goals too and is 3rd in the league in points among dmen. Elvis Merzlikins has started 23 games in goal, we should see him tonight. Hes the best of a bad bunch at 3.09/.890. Daniil Tarasov is the backup he’s at 4.23/.857. The Jackets can score, 9th in the league at 3.30 goals per game. But they don’t defend very well, they’re 30th in goals against at 3.59. They’re 18th in the PP, 26th in the PK.

Note the late start tonight. FanDuel for TV. If you’re headed out tonight, watch out for the other guy and don’t be the other guy. Happy New Year!

For whatever reason, teams with that "score well, defend like crap" dynamic give Carolina fits. Case in point ... they've split a pair with this Columbus team so far this season. Of course, the loss was in a shootout on a night when Martin was ... ummm ... off a bit. OK, he was horrific. Still, Carolina best be ready to work tonight because no matter what else is going on, the Blue Jackets make you work for it.

The shootout loss was mostly Kochetkov, Martin had to relieve him in OT after Kochetkov got run over by Walker. Martin made 1 save in OT, gave up the shootout opener to Monahan and Necas, Svech and Aho couldn’t convert.

It's a Jackets / Canes game on or about NYD; expect this one to have something weird happen, and bet the over if you're a better.
7-4 Canes

Oooh, that's right. It was Kooch that had the adventure that night. I was just remembering an adventure. Either way, strap in for this one. As Polar notes, games in Columbus are often weird ... and not just on Holidays

To be fair, Martin’s season has been a nightmare aside from the shutout against Ottawa, so the bad games all kind of blend together. Take that out and his best save % is .864 against the Rangers the day before Thanksgiving. He followed that up by giving up 10 goals on 57 shots in the Florida home and home for a tidy .825 save percentage.

Yeah, he had a rough camp too ... he wasn't even that much better than Perets. There's a reason he's bounced around so much.
