Ready for #CanesLateNight?

The Canes look to right the ship after a dud against Columbus on Saturday. Haula and Hamilton continued their torrid starts with goals but there wasn’t a lot more to like about it. Aho and Neiderreiter are still cold, Aho only has an empty net goal on the season. The power play has cooled off too, going 0-5 in the last 2 games. But the Kings offer a remedy for that, they’re DFL on the PK at an abysmal 56.3%. Brian Gibbons will make his Canes debut, replacing Julien Gauthier on the 4th line.

The Kings opened with a 3 game Western Canada swing, going 1-2-0, the last game was a 8-2 pasting by Vancouver. They split a pair of games over the weekend, beating Nashville and losing to Vegas. Brown and Doughty each have 3 goals, Kopitar has 6 assists and 8 points. Both goalies have been bad. Jack Campbell has the only 2 wins but has a 3.48/.885 line. Quick has been brutal, 0-3 with a 6.43 GAA and .793 save %

Woah ... you got on this early. If figured I'd knock this one out after getting some early work done, but you're all over it, Andy. Good man.

Fun side note on the Kings. They're engaged in a kind of grumpy rebuild and it took them a LONG time to admit that their aging roster actually needed rebuilding. Quick is probably cooked, that ridiculous stab at resurrecting Kovalchuk last season was a disaster, and aside from Kopitar being halfway decent the rest of the Kings veteran group pretty much bottomed out last year. It was ugly and you figured that the general vibe might at least lighten up now that they've taken that first step ... admitting that you have a problem.

And then they do this ... https://losangeles.cbslocal.com/2019/10/14/la-kings-cover-taylor-swift-banner-staples-center-curse/
Yup. It's all Taylor Swift's fault and covering her Staples Center banner is going to make everything better. Idiots.

On the actual game itself ... Todd McLellan (who is only 52 but seems much, much older) is at least getting production out of their top line. The D is a mess but at least Phaneuf isn't hanging around making it worse any more. The goaltending sucks and the special teams haven't been good. Bottom line, this may be the perfect bounce-back scenario for the Canes. I just hope they come out ticked off and ready to work. Because if there's one thing a Todd McLellan team will always do ... it's muck up the flow of the game. And the Canes don't generally like that.

To that end, I like swapping out the veteran Gibbons with Gauthier for this trip. He's nothing special but he's been there/done that while Gauthier is very much still finding his way. Maybe if Martinook was on the roster to play the caddy role, that would be fine but the team is already playing with Necas doing what can only be described as expressionist things on a regular basis. Two guys who aren't quite in focus might just be too many for a team that thrives on everybody pulling the oars on tempo. Here's hoping that TVR gets back on this trip as well ... for much the same reason. Fleury is somewhat improved over past versions, but he's still sort of all over the place. With TVR, positioning and predictability are never issues and that's a good thing on the 3rd pairing.

Back to basics for the good guys, the Kings will troll and meddle as much as they can, but our Canes will prevail.... 6-3 final. Aho with two an and addy... Turbo with three helpers, Nieds with a goal. Lets go Canes!!

Aho is at the top of the fancy stats heap. He’s 3rd in expected goals but next to last in goals v. expected goals. But Nino has been just as bad at finishing and all 4 of Turbo’s assists are on the PP, where he and Aho are on different units.

It will all change tonight as "two merge into one"

Yeah ... Luke expands on my comments in the last game thread better than I could, for sure. Aho has generally been excellent. He's just in that zone where nothing drops for him or his line mates 5v5. It happens.

The morning skate in LA just started. Taylor Swift’s banner is visible and Mrazek is in the starters crease.

On goalies, I think we're pretty much going to rotate until one of them either sparkles or stinks.

Tonight’s officials:

Referees:
Jake Brenk #26, Dean Morton #36

Linesmen:
Derek Nansen #70, Ryan Gibbons #58

Canes were 4-1 with Brenk and 1-2 with Morton last year, Kings were 2-3 and 2-5, respectively. They haven’t had a winning record with either of them in the last 3 seasons. Home teams won 59% of the games that Morton worked last year.

The Canes were outplayed for long stretches of the 1st period and were outshot 16-9. Aho missed a wide open net from the bottom of the circle as a Canes PP was expiring. But it’s still 0-0.

Better period from the Canes, Necas’ goal was the only score. Canes held the Kings without a shot almost to the 8 minute mark and only allowed 3 total.

Turbo time... EN goal with help from Aho. Hey hey, whaddaya say...

Doesn't look like they're crediting Aho with an assist, but he won the key face-off and was instrumental in getting it down the ice...

The official scoresheet gave the goal to Aho. It must have ticked off his skate.
