GDT: Canes @ Panthers 11/30 4:00

I’m just glad this hell week is over and they went 2-2, I actually thought it was probably 0-4 or 0-3-1…

I wasn't optimistic through two periods that betting the over at 6.5 goals was a good idea...now, I'm not so sure.

And the worse that this team does with the AHL level goaltending, the more that they'll have to spend to get a decent goalie.

Maybe just maybe this wakes up the front office even more to understand that Martin isn’t even a viable backup and needs to be in Chicago full time.

Can’t pin this one on Martin, everyine in front of him was garbage. After a scoreless first period, in which the Canes outshot the Panthers 11-9, the Canes took 9 shots total the rest of the game, including 2 in the 3rd period. The first shot in the 3rd was at 3:15, the last shot was at 19:36.

FTFY.

Sheesh, man. The Hurricanes need to stop hemmoraging goals and get a legitimate NHL backstop that the team has faith in who can actually take control of a game. This snowball going downhill of goals against needs to end. If the guy can't stop the puck, just play 6 on 5 and take your chances. It couldn't be much worse, could it? {Polar's word}.

As much as Martin reminded me of Frank Pietrangelo circa 1992-93 the last two games, I'd be remiss if I didn't remind the Canes offense that you can't win a game if you don't score.

True, but we've been here before and it's unsettling to the entire system when they're playing in front of a goalie that can't be trusted. Call it a butterfly effect or a snowball effect ... whatever. I think it's more like skiing down a slope you aren't qualified to handle.

Not qualified to handle is a good way to assess Martin many a nights so far...in a pinch he's fine, every day or even every third game is not really what you want or need.

Yeah ... he's a third option being thrust into a first option role for a hot minute. Take a look around the rest of the league's third options and you'll find a bunch of guys like Martin. He's not the problem, or at least he's not supposed to be the problem for long.

Hoping it was a shorter hot minute than what we've already endured. The most memorable time when the team covered for a goaltender they did know/trust was (Hurricanes Legend) David Ayres. He let a couple in a couple of easy ones and the team locked the Leafs down in front of him. That hasn't & shouldn't have to be happening in front of Martin. Florida is a much tougher team to do that to, I'd wager. It definitely exposes a massive fault in the Hurricanes goalie development. Like jeffbear said, third string netminders are where they are for a reason. Given Freddy Andersen's fragile nature, they might have guessed it could come to this. Situationally unaware much? *just how I see it*

The problem is that Spencer Martin looked like a fully capable #3 with his performances @Vegas and @Boston last season. He was spectacular in those games. That led to him getting an extension to be the #3 for this season. Well, reality has set in unfortunately and he has turned back into that journeyman #3 fringe guy that he really is. Most #3s do that eventually. I do think the Canes thought Martin could be a guy we could play 20 games in a season and get good enough goaltending from. Doesn't look like that guy this season.

As we know, we don't need our goalies to be spectacular. We just need them to make the routine saves and be just average. Spencer Martin isn't capable of doing that more than maybe 1 out of 5 games apparently. With Freddie down and PK being so injury prone, we are going to need to find another #3 who we can trust with Martin showing he isn't capable.

Can you imagine what this team could be with an actual elite #1 goalie who isn't injury prone? I wonder if we will ever find out.

I see Alex Lyon still out there and remember him being capable when he played for Carolina. What was it that caused him to be sent packing and not given another look? I just don't remember him ever stinking the joint up, but please consider that memory isn't exactly what it may have been.

We didn’t send him packing, he was a UFA. We had Andersen, Raanta and Kochetkov, so he probably took a look at the roster, saw there was no room at the inn and signed with the Panthers.

Lyon only got two NHL games with the Canes in 21-22 and was correctly looking for a better pathway to NHL games. It's not like he was even going to be the clear 3rd option for Carolina, since that was the season Kochetkov came to North America and immediately started paying well in the A.
