The new look Canes go for the season sweep against the Blueshirts.
The team stayed in New York and got in a full practice yesterday. Rantanen stayed on Aho’s wing with Blake, Hall skated with KK and Svech. Roslovic missed practice due to an illness, Riley Stillman took his place on the 4th line. That’s something to keep an eye on. Andersen was listed first in Walt Ruff’s lineup so presumably he’s the starter tonight; it would make sense for RBA to rotate them at least for a little while.
After briefly falling into the Metro basement, the Rangers are on a run with points in 10 of their last 11. They’re coming off a loss to the Avs on Sunday. They have 52 points in 49 games, 5th in the division. They’re 10 points behind the Devils for 3rd with 3 games in hand and 3 points behind Tampa for the last wild card, with 3 teams ahead of them. Their resurgence has a lot to do with offense. Through December 31, they were averaging 2.81 goals per game, 23rd in the league. But since January 1, they’re 2nd at 3.62 goals per game. Artemi Panarin leads with 21 goals, they have 7 players with at least 10. Adam Fox has 37 assists, tied for 5th among dmen. Igor Shesterkin has started 8 of their 13 games this month and he’s back to his old self, 1.83/.930 in that span. They’ve saved most of their bad play for Jonathan Quick, he’s 4.19/.875 in the month. Even With Quick’s bad numbers, the Rangers are only allowing 2.69 goals per game in January, 12th best, just behind the Canes. Their PP has also picked up, they were converting 18.0% on 12/31, 28.6% since. Their PK has taken a dip, 84.8% on 12/31, 78.8% since.
