The Canes face the streaking Blueshirts.

Losers of 3 of their last 4, the Canes are in a bit of a slump. The scoring dried up in the 3 losses, scoring only 6 goals. RBA put the top 9 in the blender and came up with this at practice yesterday.

They’re skating this morning so we’ll see if those combos stick. We could also see Pyotr Kochetkov make his season debut.

The Rangers returned from a trip out west and brought a 3 game winning streak home with them, beating Vancouver, Edmonton and Seattle after opening the trip with a loss to Calgary. Taylor Raddysh leads with 5 goals, Adam Fox has 8 assists. They’ve been without Vincent Trocheck since he left during their 2nd game of the season. He skated yesterday but wasn’t on line rushes. According to Peter Baugh from The Athletic, this is how they skated in practice yesterday.

Igor Shesterkin didn’t have a great road trip, he started 3 of their 4 games, winning 2 and posting 3.23/.873. But he had been otherworldly at the start of the season, at 1.86/.930 in his first 7 games, despite the Rangers only posting a 2-3-2 record. Their problem has been scoring, they‘re 31st at 2.38 goals per game. But they’re 2nd in goals against, also at 2.38. Their PP is bad, tied for 30th but the PK is good, 8th at 84.9%

National TV tonight with TNT and the insufferable Eddie Olczyk.

The Eastern conference has 11 of the 16 teams currently sitting at either 14 or 13 points. This is a battle of two of the teams tied at 14 points.

Right now I have no feel at all for the Canes and how we are going to play on any given night. Until we get some of our regular DMen back on the ice I expect a continuation of the uneven play.

This Rangers D can be had, but Shesterkin can beat you by himself. It doesn't help that our PP is still a hot mess with no signs of breaking out of the slump. With the Rangers always willing to fly the zone when killing penalties, I'm plenty worried that our PP is going to end up a negative tonight and bury us.

I have zero confidence in Kotchetkov shaking off the rust in a game you need against another inferior opponent...give me Freddy or Bussi please.

Drinking game tonight...take a drink every time Olczyk degrades the Canes, take another drink every time he mentions Ron Francis and take yet another every time he has a bad ass take on anything to do with the Canes or the org...you all should be hungover good in the morning!

I never have much confidence in Kochetkov, honestly. He's a walking wild card. That said, he's been pretty good against NYR in his career. Maybe he just gets dialed in facing off with Shesterkin. I dunno.

Brindy's line shifting looks like an attempt to rebalance the lines and maybe get Aho going a bit by giving him a couple of linemates who create a bit of havoc. That'll be up to Svech to show up in the right mood, of course.

Seeing tweets from everyone not affiliated with the Canes about the morning skate. Dan Rosen from NHL.com says Kochetkov is in the starter’s crease. Peter Baugh from The Athletic said that K’Andre Miller took the morning skate. And as I type this, there is nothing from either the Canes or Walt Ruff.

Of course, right after I hit enter, Walt Ruff posted. Miller skated with Fensore so he’s out. Kochetkov was in the stwrter’s crease, presumably backed up by Bussi, although Andersen did travel, he just didn’t skate.

Svechnikov - Aho - Hall
Ehlers - Stankoven - Blake
Martinook - Staal - Jarvis
Jankowski - Kotkaniemi - Nadeau

Nikishin - Walker
Chatfield - Nystrom
Reilly - Legault
Miller - Fensore

Kochetkov | Bussi

Tonight’s officials:

Referees:
Morgan MacPhee #43, Jean Hebert #15

Linesmen:
Jonathan Deschamps #80, Andrew Smith #51

MacPhee is in his 4th season working a split NHL/AHL schedule. The Canes are 2-1 with him. Hebert is coming off his 2nd consecutive Finals appearance and 3rd in 4 years. The Canes were 1-3 with him last year but 6-2 combined the previous 2 seasons.

Rangers expected to roll, end that home losing streak tonight against a depleted Canes team and a goalie in his first start.

As to the drinking game, I wouldn't last 1 period.
