GDT: Canes v. Flyers 10/11 7:00

What a night! After the Flyers scored in OT, we left our seats and headed down the concourse - only to stop and watch one of the monitors. When Toronto overturned that goal due to GI, we charged back to our seats. And lo and behold, the first line finally decided they wanted to play and after a series of zip passes, Jarvey's one-time blast sealed the deal. The place went wild!

Other thoughts: We played a great 1st period (again), with nothing to show for it. Way too many weak or intercepted passes and flustered shots out of our zone. Our top line was pretty bad all night long and Svech wasn't good either, a disturbing trend. I hardly noticed Ehlers, but Miller looked good. Staal and Marty had some great moments, cashing in on one of them. Freddie was OK and made a few critical saves.

Not nearly enough Jimmy Buffet songs for Margaritaville night. But a fun time in the end.
My daughter and I had bolted at the goal (not) and were in the car when the OT resumed. Crazy.
And can we please just ask AI to design a better power play for us? It surely wouldn’t be less successful.

I think the power play will be just fine. The eight looks we've had of it so far represent a significant step forward from last year.
I haven’t seen a whole lot of the skate it in, lose it, retrieve it from Freddie, rinse and repeat from last year. So far.

We had some excellent chances, but 'finishing' still isn't our thing. Despite some new players in new roles, I think most aspects of the PP looked pretty good. However, poor passing in the face of an aggressive PK needs to be improved.

On the PP, I do think some shifts might be coming. Blake and Stankoven are driving better looks on that second unit largely because they're not NEARLY as patient as the guys in those positions on the first unit. Wouldn't shock me to see one of them moved to PP1 to drive the urgency a bit. Aho and Ehlers are both just so patient that they're willing to fritter away huge chunks of possession time, and having both of them on the half wall at the same time may not be the best idea. I've always thought Aho was best in the high slot on the power play, FWIW.

Overall, welcome to the 2020 Rick Tocchet Coyotes, right down to Christian Dvorak whining at length every time he gets tossed out of the circle. Seriously. He's running every boring bit of it back. The Flyers will get more points than anybody expects, but mostly out of robbing everyone involved of their collective will to care.

Carolina played OK, nothing more. They absolutely showed off their new-ish dedication to at least trying to get some transition looks, and good thing it paid off for them because otherwise the offense was dreadful. And all that surprising cohesion on defense lasted one game, as all the unfamiliarity we were looking for showed up on Saturday. Meh. Work in progress stuff, and I think this team is going a few weeks to get settled.

Forgot one ... hoping Slavin is only out for the short term. He's the one thing this team can't really do without or replace.

Nikishin seems to be getting a little more comfortable skating the puck in, and giving some offensive chances. He's got a lot more skill than we've seen so far.
