GDT: Canes v. Flyers 11/5 7:00

Too early to consider Necas as our one All Star rep in January?
Yes. There is no All Star Game this season, it was replaced by the 4 Nations Face-Off. And Czechia isn’t one of the 4 nations.

Necas‘ last 3 shifts were all over 1 minute. He had 19 shifts, 8 of them were over 1 minute, 2 others were at least 50 seconds.

We need to talk about our goalie with a .878 save % though. In his 7 games, he has 3 games above .900 and 2 games, including last night, below .800. Both of those were games where they allowed fewer than 20 shots but he gave up 4 goals, the other was the last game the team lost, in St. Louis. A goalie behind a team that doesn’t allow a lot of shots is going to have a lower than normal number. And with only 16 shots last night, even 2 goals allowed would have been below .900.

The brain farts of inconsistency seem to continue to be his greatest warts. He goes from flashes of brilliance to what the hell was that…is he just a feast or famine type of guy that probably won’t change or is that fixable?

With Kooch, what you see is what you get. He's had plenty of time to show progress but remains as much of an enigma as he has been since he joined the big league. We've got one consistently reliable goalie who is consistently injury-prone, and one who is consistently inconsistent.

Which is why you need to look at the quality of the shots he saves and doesn't save. He still has a positive Saves Above Expected Per 60 and is 26th by that measure among the 49 goalies who have played at least five games this season.

I'm not saying the concerns about Koochie aren't valid and the brain farts he still experiences are a concern. Overall, as the numbers suggest, he has been an average goalie this season.

My favorite part of the last two games has been to watch Necas channel his inner Joni Pitkanen late in the game. Last night, his spin-or-ramas and ability to open the ice (WITHOUT TURNING IT OVER) was just amazing.

Kochetkov is a more volatile version of Petr Mrazek. You are going to get some brilliance, you are going to get some headscratching moments.

(WITHOUT TURNING IT OVER)
IMO, that’s the biggest change from last year. He’s not losing the puck in the middle of a spin. And the other 4 skaters are trying to find space instead of being stationary. He swoops, he twirls, he creates space for himself or has managed to find a teammate more often than not. He has 11 giveaways this year, which I don’t think is bad for a guy that has the puck on his stick as much as he does. He’s also 4th on the team in takeaways, so he’s only net -5 for the season.

Skill wise the Canes have no one close to what Nachos can do with the puck...I think his biggest bugaboo were the turnovers and defensive miscues and he has cleaned most of that up! Without getting too excited this early, I hope the Canes can get something long term done with him as soon as he can sign an extension next summer...

Sloppy, gross game ... so Torts won the style battle. Otherwise, Kochetkov REALLY should have sat that one out. He really never seemed to be tracking the puck well all night, and I'll chalk that up to mental fatigue all day long. The D had a few oopsies as well, and there were some weird bounces, but if Kooch has a normal one then the Canes aren't out there looking for absolute magic from Necas in the last minute to salvage a W.

I think they HAVE to let Martin play on Thursday because there's no way you want to go into that road trip with a mentally wrung out starter.

The man wanted a bigger role, he wanted more ice time, more pp time, he’s earned it!
Well, he's earning it NOW. Going into the season, not so much. But yeah, the version of Necas where he looks for his shot, waits for the play to develop and doesn't constantly try to beat 3 guys on his own? Yeah, that version of Necas is worth every penny he's gonna get.
