The Canes open a brief homestand against the Islanders on National TV.

Svech unexpectedly missed Tuesday’s game against the Flyers. Michael Bunting replaced him on the top line and had a goal and an assist, Brendan Lemieux replaced him in the lineup and had a goal. The team didn’t practice yesterday, so no word on Svech’s health. It wouldn’t shock me to see Kochetkov in goal again, his last 2 appearances have been solid and he’s been good since his recall. In 5 appearances (4 starts) in November, he’s at 1.73/.929.

The Islanders had their 6 game point streak snapped on Tuesday. Despite their run, they’re 3-4-3 in their last 10 and sit 5th in the division with 22 points in 21 games. Brock Nelson leads with 10 goals, Mathew Barzal and Noah Dobson each have 13 assists. Ilya Sorokin has started 14 games in goal, he’s at 3.10/.913. Semyon Varlamov backs up and is at 2.30/.930. The Isles are 28th in goals per game at 2.62 and 16th in goals against. Their PP is good, 8th 22.4%. They’ve scored 13 PP goals, so more than 20% of their goals have come on the PP. Their PK is bad, 31st at 70.6%

Black jerseys tonight, National TV on ESPN+ with Steve Levy and Chicken Parm on the call.

4 of the Isles last 7 games have gone to extra time, which is approaching Paul Maurice 1.0 levels frankly. With their big swing for Bo Horvat kind of fizzling out, the Islanders are probably the most boring team in pro hockey at this stage. If it wasn't for Barzal they might be unwatchable. Fortunately for them, that goalie tandem is not just good ... it's consistent, which is the absolute gold standard in today's NHL.

Canes fans know this drill too well. Hammer whoever is in net until they crack and try not to get frustrated in the process.

That’s what the Canes did on November 4. By the 13 minute mark of the 2nd, the Isles were up 3-0. But Chatfield answered less than 30 seconds after their 3rd goal, Orlov and KK scored in the 3rd and Aho won it in OT. The Canes had 46 shots, 32 in the last 2 periods, 1 in OT.

Tonight’s officials:

Referees:
Kyle Rehman #10, Gord Dwyer #19

Linesmen:
Julien Fournier #56, Libor Suchanek #60

Kochetkov is in the starter's crease at the morning skate. Svech is skating with Drury and Noesen. No changes on D.

Bunting - Aho - Jarvis
Teravainen - Kotkaniemi - Necas
Martinook - Staal - Fast
Svechnikov - Drury - Noesen

Isles lines at their skate. Former Cane Julien Gauthier is in the lineup for the 3rd straight game. He has 1 assist in 4 games. Their d pairs seemed jumbled to the reporter so we’ll see what happens. Varlamov gets the start in goal.

Lee-Horvat-Barzal
Engvall-Nelson-Palmieri
Holmstrom-Pageau-Wahlstrom

With our depth we kind of have the Staal line and then 3 lines that are all dangerous. Hard to match up for opposing coaches.

ESPN+ is absolute garbage! I've used some poorly designed apps, but this TV ap takes the cake for being absolute trash.
