The Canes take on the reeling Kings.

A depleted Canes team beat the Blackhawks on Thursday night. Due to whatever is rolling through the locker room, the Canes onky dressed 11 forwards and that was only because Ryan Suzuki arrived 15 minutes before warmups. He looked fine in his debut and pulled one out of the crease on a nice back check. His reward was being sent back to Chicago yesterday to make room for Riley Stillman. Moose opened his Canes account, Jarvis had another shorty, Slavin had a tap in. The team cancelled practice yesterday, we’ll have to see who is healthy enough to make it to the morning skate. Expect Andersen in goal.

The Kings are wrapping up a 5 game road trip and it’s not going well. They lost to the Jackets in OT last Saturday, then in regulation to Detroit, Florida and Tampa, the latter 2 by identical 3-0 shutouts after giving up 5 to Detroit. They’re 2-7-1 in their last 10. Despite the slump, they’re still 3rd in the division but only 1 point ahead of Calgary and 2 ahead of Vancouver, with games in hand on both. The big news on the trip is Drew Doughty’s return. He made his season debut on Wednesday after missing the first 47 games with a broken ankle sustained in a preseason game. Adrian Kempe has 24 goals, Anze Kopitar has 31 assists. Old friend Warren Foegele has 12 goals, 24 points and is tied with Kempe at +15. Another old friend, Joel Edmundson is +14. Darcy Kuemper has started 27 games in goal, we should see him tonight, he had Thursday off. He‘s 4th in the league in both goals against at 2.17 and save % at .921. He’s backed up by David Rittich at 2.62/.889 in 23 games. The Kings are 24th in goals per game and 5th in goals against. They’re 29th on the PP and 8th on the PK.

Black jerseys tonight. FanDuel for TV

Aho and Hall are back, Staal is missing from the skate. Jost is in a regular jersey. Stillman and Suzuki are both skating. Andersen in the starter’s crease.

I guess I missed it that Suzuki was back up today.
RBA said after practice that he flew to Chicago and turned around and came back. He also said “everyone is questionable“. Staal was sent home, he’s probably out. We’ll see how many show up for warmups.

Just trying to get to the 4 Nations break at this point. Shame they have to fly to freaking Winnipeg next, but at least they can take Sunday off. Presumably this is a flu bug, since nobody's getting over RSV or Norovirus in a couple of days. And I hope none of them got the strain I got, because hoo boy ... that sucked. The good news is that the Devils have been in the tank for a while now, so 2nd place in the Metro is pretty secure even if the Canes hit the wall before the break.

Perfect weather for tailgating but…State is hosting Clemson at 1:30. The Canes email says parking lots open at 4, but the game won’t end until 3:30 ish, it’s gonna be a mess at 4.

Today’s officials:

Referees:
Francois St. Laurent #8, Brandon Blandina #38

Linesmen:
Julien Fournier #56, Ryan Jackson #84

Over the last 3 years, the Canes are 11-1-1 with St. Laurent and 10-1 with Blandina. Ryan Jackson is working a split AHL/NHL contract. His father is retired NHL ref and current ESPN rules expert Dave Jackson.

State folks are bitching about having to clear out on such a nice afternoon. You know ... the usual.

The crew has gotten very good at flipping the inside. But the parking lot is another matter entirely.

Svech isn’t on the ice, out with an upper body injury.
