GDT: Canes v. Panthers 3/14 7:00

Happy Pi Day to all that celebrate.

The teampracticed yesterday, hopefully the new line of Guentzel-Kuzy-Necas got some good work done. Getting that line up to speed quickly is the most important item on RBAs agenda. Andersen was in the starter's crease. With games essentially every other day, RBA and Schonfelder have to decide how much work he’s going to get to ensure he’s sharp for the playoffs. Fatigue shouldn’t be a factor, I could see him out there for 2 of every 3 games.

The Panthers lead the league in points and points %. They’re 8-2 in their last 10 and are coming off a win over Dallas on Tuesday. Sam Reinhart is this year’s surprise entrant to the 40 goals club, building off the 64 he scored in the last 2 years. His 46 goals are tied for 2nd in the league. Carter Verhaeghe is showing that last year’s 42 goal outburst wasn’t a fluke, he has 30. Matthew Tkachuk leads with 53 assists, tied for 9th in the league. Old friend Gustav Forsling leads the league at +48, 12 better than Quinn Hughes. The Panthers will be without Aaron Ekblad, he’s out at least 2 weeks with a lower body injury. In goal, Bob‘s play from the first 3 playoff rounds last year has carried over to this season. He‘s at 2.30/.918 in 47 games. He's backed up by Anthony Stolarz, rescued off the Anaheim scrap heap. He‘s at 2.02/.925 in 21 games. Among goalies that have played more than 20 games, Stolarz leads the league in both categories, Bob is 2nd in GAA and 5th in Save %. The Panthers are 8th in goals per game and 1st in goals against. They’re tied for 2nd on the PP, but they lead the league since January 1, converting 35.3% of their chances. They’re 7th on the PK.

Black jerseys tonight, Bally Sports South for TV.

Wouldn't shock me if they just keep alternating games between Andersen and Kochetkov, so long as they both keep getting results. Roddy likes a rotation and it minimizes the risk of injury and fatigue for Freddie while keeping Kooch sharp for the post season. Maybe even mix in a start or two for Martin if you get another zombie opponent like Calgary. With Tuesday's loss to the Rangers, Carolina is all but locked into 2nd in the Metro either way. May as well work on some stuff and try to go into the post season fresh for a change.

I have no feel at all for this game tonight. Playing the Panthers after that grinding 1-0 loss to the Rangers is just about as tough as it gets.

Given that the last time we played the Panthers at PNC also ended in a 1-0 result, if you are so inclined and haven't yet used up your $1000 in free play all these sports betting sites are giving away, betting on a 1-0 result tonight might actually be a solid long shot bet to make.

No morning skate for the Canes, so Andersen probably gets the nod in goal since he was in the starter’s crease yesterday.

Chairman Mo said that Sam Bennett and Evan Rodrigues are out tonight. Bob in goal.

Or just lay it on the under. And watch while they combine for like 9 goals or something. Betting on hockey is ... a choice.

I said I wasn't going to do it, as I am not a gambler at all (bet the ponies in Toronto one time on a business trip 20 years ago) but I fell for the bonus money thing for DraftKings and Fanatics to give it a try using mostly other people's money. I am up about $100 for the week so far.... thanks to 3 for 3 last night (the Blues laid it on the Kings to win a puckline bet, Avs 3-goal comeback, and the Oilers clobbering the Capitals). Tonight, I did take the under on the Canes/Cats game and took cmal's thought and put a buck on specific score 1-0 and 2-1 Canes wins, and added a couple bucks on shot props for Necas and Jarvis. I see how it can be addictive with all the options they give you, and very easy to keep clicking. I hope to just burn through my winnings and bonus bets and then see how long I can let the accounts sit there inactive, lol.

I put in $20 (+$100 free money) when it became legal here; and I still have like $80. I bet $1 on long shots like Slavin first goal scorer going off at +7500. It's fun but very safe to make the money last.

I put in $20, plus got $200 in bonus money when I signed up with ESPN BET. Even better, I entered a promotion to go to the ESPN BET launch party in Charlotte on Friday and get to hang in the private VIP area to watch college hoops with Stephen A. Smith. I actually can't go--I'll be flying from a business trip to Toronto on Friday night, but I believe I still get the best part of the prize--$750 in bonus money!--if I don't show.

I haven’t done anything yet. The MGMRewards account is in my wife’s name and, after our trip to Vegas, we’re only a few points short of Pearl status. But I heard combining a BetMGM account with a rewards account in a different name is nearly impossible unless it’s done in person. Maybe I’ll wander over to National Harbor the next time I’m in the area for work.

Yeah we are basically taking advantage of all the free play. Between MGM and Fanduel and Draft Kings and ESPN Bet that is over $800 in free play per person (so $1600 if your significant other opens a separate account). You have to load real money first and make a real money bet of at least $5 on each of course, but loading a total of $80 and getting over $1600 in free bets is as pretty good deal.

My wife won $175 on a parlay last night with one of the $25 MGM bonus bets she got (JT Miller goal, Val Nichuskin Goal, Canucks score at least 2 goals). One of my daughter's friends hit a 5 leg parlay for $750 using one of the free $25 bonus bets he got (5 NHL winners). Once the free bets run out we will consider cashing out whatever we won with them and then very sparingly bet from there likely just using MGM where we have rewards status.

On the MGM rewards account andyt, my wife and I did connect our accounts and we did have to do that in person. As you noted, you do need to have an account in your name to tie it to the MGM Sportsbook app. We USED to just gamble under one account, but MGM makes it so you can have separate accounts and link them so they both act as if it's one account that combines the tier credits and comp dollars. Caesars doesn't allow that so we just gamble under one account there. We linked our MGM accounts at Borgata in AC, which is one of our old stomping grounds when we lived near AC and where we take a summer trip still every year. We are pretty regular casino goers, at least as far as you can be living in the Triangle. We hit Vegas for the Canes game, will end up in Cherokee once or twice this year, Borgata once and now some Danville visits sprinkled in. A product of growing up with casino lovers in CT and NJ, been going to casinos since turning 21 a long time ago. Our top entertainment spending choice for sure (well, maybe, I guess the Canes probably take more of our entertainment income).

Put it this way ... I pay most attention to the NHL and soccer and I have zippo confidence in 90% of the outcomes game to game. Which is kind of why I'm not messing around with gambling on sports.

The friends we travelled to Vegas with are MGM regulars, as are my daughter and her fiancée, who came down from Oregon. NYNY had the best rates among MGM properties when we went for the Canes game, and with status, my wife wants to limit us to MGM properties, which eliminates Cherokee and Danville. But we’re headed to Massachusetts in the summer, maybe a stop at the Borgata or National Harbor is in the cards.

We lived about an hour from AC from 1985-92 but never went. My only trips there were the discounted busses that we chartered from Villanova. Before Vegas, the last casino I was in was in Germany in the mid-80s on a work trip.

Holy [Polar's Word] there's a lot of gamblers on this board. Good for you for taking advantage of free offerings and turning it into real money. The only thing I gamble on besides the occasional lottery tickey are airplane flights and dive trips. I suppose losing either of those last two would really suck, but I wouldn't really care at that point anyhow.

I hope the Hurricanes bring you all massive winnings. Good luck & good fortune to all players.

Let's Go 'Canes!

Jim
