For the 2nd time in 10 days, the Canes and Red Wings meet.

The Canes turned in an impressive performance on Tuesday, beating the Lightning 4-1. It was the 5th win in a row and the team is playing closer to where they were at the beginning of the season. But all is not sunshine and roses. The PP still stinks and Svech is still out. This is how they practiced yesterday:

Blake - Aho - Jarvis
Hall - Kotkaniemi - Roslovic
Martinook - Staal - Stankoven
Robinson - Jankowski - Jost

Slavin - Burns
Gostisbehere - Chatfield
Walker - Morrow
Orlov

I’m not sure putting Stankoven with the Dads is the best move, but he’s being moved all over to find the best fit. Better to do that now by choice than later with no recourse. If the goalie rotation holds, we should see Andersen tonight.

Detroit snapped a 6 game losing streak on Wednesday with a 7-3 win over the Slugs. They’re 6th in the Atlantic but are only 2 points out of the last wild card, with the Rangers and Habs also ahead of them. Patrick Kane has found the Fountain of Middle Age, he had 5 points against the Slugs and is averaging better than a point per game since January 1. Alex DeBrincat scored his 30th of the season on Wednesday, his first 30 goal season since scoring 41 for Chicago in 2021-22. Lucas Raymond leads with 46 assists. They picked up old friend Petr Mrazek at the deadline for his 2nd tour of duty with the team. He was in goal on Wednesday, the 5th goalie they’ve used this season. They’re also carrying Cam Talbot and Alex Lyon, who the Canes beat on March 4. The Wings are 18th in goals per game, 23rd in goals against. The PP is good, 3rd in the league. But they’ve allowed 6 shorties, tied with 9 other teams for 5th worst. The PK is bad, DFL at 69.5%. Maybe an opportunity for the Canes sick PP?

We've made some bad PK units look really good. Even the worst PK units can easily stop the nonsense we've been trying out there since the calendar turned.

Stank with “the dads” is probably a great way to learn how the Canes play. Not only on the ice with those guys but also they’re on the bench with him. I don’t think it’s the best fit for his game though.

It’s sad to me that I’m fairly ambivalent about Svetch being out. I don’t feel like it hurts us much. We keep trotting him out there on top lines and power plays and he keeps taking penalties and not scoring. He should be a horse by now.

Svech leads the team in PIMs and is on pace for his 3d or maybe 2d highest PIMs total. Also, he’s been a plus player every year except his rookie season when he was even. Right now he’s -8. His goal total is relatively on par, but how many of those were ENers? His shooting percentage is relatively low for him. Basically, the numbers back up the eye test.

I seem to recall the last time Svech was out for any length of time, we played well and won. He’s a big, powerful man, but between penalties and his lack of point production, he’s not always a contributor.

as my favorite player currently it's hard to say, but he's taken a step back and I don't know why. Ever since the ACL he hasn't been dominate for more than a game or two at a time.

Svech and Orlov are out again. Orlov is day to day and could play tomorrow. RBA is hopeful that Svech could return next week.

I'm also o.k. with that. I keep expecting Svech to shift his game into a higher gear and to become the dominant power forward, and dangerous scoring threat we hoped for. Instead, he maintains the critical bonehead penalty collection hobby he's had since he arrived. We all want him to grow out of it or to develop less hurtful habits, but that doesn't appear like it's going to happen. [Polars Word] I believe that other teams respect his game, though I think they know they can goad him into taking a stupid penalty. We've definitely seen it before.
