For the first game for fans at PNC in more than a year, we should get the long awaited matchup of the brothers Svechnikov.

The Canes are riding a 3 game winning streak and are tied with Tampa for first in the division, but 3rd on points %. Tonight kicks off a 4 game homestand with stand alone games tonight and Sunday before a pair with Nashville on Tuesday and Thursday. This is the first game against the Red Wings since opening weekend where the teams split a pair of games. In what has turned out to be a preview of the season, the Canes blew a late 3rd period lead and lost the last game 4-2. There shouldn’t be any lineup changes tonight.

The Red Wings have lost their last 2 games but have climbed out of the cellar, owing more to the Stars collapse than great play. The Wings are tied with Ottawa for last in the league with a .340 points %. Bobby Ryan leads with 6 goals and 13 points. Filip Hronek has 10 assists. Evgeny Svechnikov made his season debut last week and has 2 goals and an assist in 3 games. Detroit coach Jeff Blashill wouldn’t commit to playing him tonight though. Jonathan Bernier has been decent in goal at 2.84/.913. He was pulled after 2 periods on Tuesday after allowing 4 goals on 27 shots. Thomas Greiss finished and stopped all 9 shots he faced. His last start didn’t go as well, allowing 7 goals to Chicago on 32 shots. He’s at 3.38/.885 for the season and has only 1 win in 14 starts. Detroit is next to last at 2.08 goals per game and 28th in goals against per game at 3.28. Their special teams are bad, 30th on both the PP and PK at 9.9% and 70.4%, respectively.

Can't afford to underestimate and overlook any team on your schedule. The Hurricanes needs to win this one from the opening drop.

Chip saying on Twitter that Tuevo is in a regular jersey this morning. Maybe he's playing tonight?

One thing to note about Detroit ... while they aren't good, they have managed to cobble together a pretty mobile group. So, Carolina's going to have to transition from playing Nashville and Florida (two teams that can be a bit ... ummm ... ponderous) to playing a team that can blow by you if you aren't on your toes. They struggled a bit with Detroit's pace back in January, even in that game that they won in a shutout. And yes, it feels weird to talk about Detroit's team speed when they routinely play Marc Staal 16-18 minutes per game ... but here we are.

I'm sure it'll be weird (and hopefully a bit reassuring) for the guys to play in front of fans, but watching from home I haven't noticed that any of the teams allowing fans in their buildings have anything you could call a home atmosphere. That separation zone seems to take care of that ... plus, those big old barns with a couple of thousand people rattling around just reminds me of playing high school basketball games in college buildings back in the day.

Lorentz would at least have his first NHL goal to feel good about as he transitions to the press box if Teuvo returns

Looks like RBA is putting the band back together. The SAT line has been reunited with Turbo at the morning skate. Gardiner and Mrazek are also practicing.

Edit: Chip says Ned is in the starter’s crease. If Mrazek is back on Sunday as expected, this may be his farewell appearance this season, absent injury to or major suckage by the others.

In his post-practice Zoom availability, Martinook was asked about a Storm Surge if they win. He said “watch the game”

RBA said Turbo is a game time decision, Gardiner is out.

The Canes are keeping Lorentz on the active roster to avoid exposing him to waivers (for now, not sure if they will continue to do that). Only Ned and Bean are riding the Taxi squad train now.

After tonight's start, Ned can only play 2 more games or spend 10 more days on the NHL roster before he would have to clear waivers to get back to the taxi squad. The Canes have the cap and roster room to not have to expose Lorentz or Ned to waivers, but it does reduced bank capped room (not by too much of course) to have to keep them on the roster.

I think Ned goes back to the taxi squad after the game tonight. They’re off until Sunday, so they can bank those days at least but, if they’re aiming for Mrazek to be back Sunday, there isn’t a need to carry him on the roster unless they want to give him a spot start.

Michael Smith‘s projected lineup includes Turbo. I guess if he can’t go, Lorentz slides back in? Ned in goal.

Niederreiter-Trocheck-Necas
McGinn-Staal-Fast
Martinook-Paquette-Foegele
