The Canes open a back to back with the banged up Wild.

The Canes put together a complete performance in South Florida, taking down the Panthers 3-1. It started early with a Burns goal at 35 seconds and it ended comically with Slavin scoring while Tkachuk was sitting on KK in the crease, distracting Bob. Drury is back, we’ll see how he and KK are deployed. With a divisional game tomorrow, I expect we’ll see Tokarski today. They’re skating at 10:30 so we’ll see.

The Wild come in winners of 4 of their last 5 but 5-5 in their last 10. They beat the Caps in a shootout on Thursday. They’re 2nd in the Central with 52 points in 39 games. They also have a stunning 14-3-3 road record. Kirill Kaprizov hasn’t played since 12/23 and captain Jared Spurgeon is also out. Marco Rossi has 15 goals and 8 points in his last 8 games. Matt Boldy has 13 goals. Among active players, they’re tied with 18 assists. We should see Filip Gustavsson in goal tonight, old man Fleury played on Thursday. Gustavsson is 4th in the league at 2.24 GAA and 3rd with a .924 save %. They don’t score a lot, 19th at 2.95 goals per game but they’re 6th in goals against 3 spots ahead of the Canes. Their special teams aren’t special, the PP is 20th and the PK is 30th.

Black jerseys, FanDuel for TV.

So we have our answers. KK stays at 2C, Kochetkov in goal.

Jarvis - Aho - Roslovic
Svechnikov - Kotkaniemi - Necas
Martinook - Staal - Carrier
Robinson - Drury - Blake

Slavin - Burns
Orlov - Chatfield
Smith - Walker

Tonight’s officials:

Referees:
Jame Brenk #26, Michael Markovic #31

Linesmen:
Dan Kelly #98, Matt MacPherson #83

Canes are a combined 3-0 with these 2 refs this year. Brenk is a Minnesota native and played 4 years at Minnesota State-Mankato with David Backes and Ryan Carter. He was drafted by the Oilers in 2001 but never played higher than the ECHL.

No Kaprizov or Sturgeon for the Wild is two pretty key pieces out. Hopefully the Canes can bring some of that Thursday grit and determination into tonight.

Local Baptists know ... it's Spurgeon. No relation aside from spelling to the theologian Charles Spurgeon.

And yeah, that's their best forward, best defenseman (and Captain) out of the lineup. For a team that's not terrifically deep to begin with. But, this is a playoff team that's got a better record than the Canes, so they have ZERO excuses not to show up ready to grind tonight.

Staal and KK swapped wings again, as they did for Florida. This is how they warmed up.

Jarvis - Aho - Roslovic
Martinook - Kotkaniemi - Carrier
Svechnikov - Staal - Necas
Robinson - Drury - Blake

Slavin - Burns
Orlov - Chatfield
Smith - Walker

The stink from the Canes must be noticeable way up in the last few rows of the 300 level…this one is about to get the kabosh for the NFL tonight for me.

And at the 2nd timeout there was a guy doing to the Polar and Mrs. Polar thing.

You bail on this team that quickly? Yeah, they were crap for the first 15 minutes, but there are 60 minutes in a game!
Options at home are a beautiful thing, if you think that’s great hockey then cheers! 🍻 Maybe Rod will peel the paint in between periods and wake them up…
