PANTHERS (5-4-5) at DUCKS (11-3-4)
TV: FS-F, PRIME
The Latest: The Ducks (11-3-4, 26 pts.) host the Florida Panthers in the second half of a back to back tonight at Honda Center (5 p.m. PST, Prime Ticket/AM 830). The Ducks rank tied for second among NHL teams in overall standings points, own the league's longest active point streak at seven games (3-0-4, 10 pts.) and have earned points 15 of their last 17 games (11-2-4, 26 pts.). The Ducks are in California for 24 of 30 days this month, playing only three road games outside of the state (3-2 win on Nov. 2 at Colorado and upcoming games on Nov. 18 at Calgary and Nov. 20 at Vancouver). In total, the Ducks will play eight home games in November, tied with January for their busiest month of the season at Honda Center.
Tonight's game concludes Anaheim's third set of back-to-back games this season. The Ducks are 3-1-1 in back-to-back games, including a 2-0-0 mark in the second game. Dating to the start of the 2013-14 season, Anaheim is 23-6-4 in back-to-backs and 13-1-2 in the second game, an NHL best by win/points percentage (.847). Following tonight's game, the Ducks embark on a two-game Western Canadian road trip that makes stops in Calgary (Tuesday, Nov. 18, 6 p.m. PST) and Vancouver (Thursday, Nov. 20, 7 p.m. PST). Anaheim's next home game is slated for Sunday, Nov. 23 vs. Arizona (5 p.m. PST).
Ducks-Panthers: Anaheim and Florida begin a two-game season series this evening at Honda Center. The Ducks are 11-10-4 all-time vs. the Panthers and have won two straight home games dating to a 5-3 victory on Dec. 1, 2010. These two teams split the 2013-14 series, each winning its respective home game: a 6-2 Ducks victory on Mar. 23, 2014 and a 3-2 Panthers win on Nov. 12, 2013. Ryan Getzlaf has 4-5=9 points in seven career games vs. Florida, tops among active Anaheim skaters. The Ducks and Panthers will meet again on Tuesday, Feb. 10 at BB&T Center (4:30 p.m. PST), wrapping up the season series.
Ducks team scope: Anaheim has lost four of five, but has earned a point in each of the losses, including a 3-2 overtime decision against the Kings on Saturday. The Ducks beat Los Angeles 6-5 in a shootout Wednesday, but have not won in regulation since forward Corey Perry went out because of mumps. "We're battling through a lot of injuries. We have some big guys out of the lineup," Getzlaf said. "When we manage to get points every night, it's a positive. Do we want two points? Yes, but we’re getting points and moving forward.” Perry, who has 11 goals, returned to practice Thursday; coach Bruce Boudreau said he hopes to have him back within a week. Jason LaBarbera, who is 2-0-1 with a 2.66 goals-against average since being called up from Norfolk of the American Hockey League, could get the start Sunday after Frederik Andersen played against the Kings.
Panthers team scope: Florida opens its four-game road trip in Anaheim following a 1-1-1 homestand. Defenseman Aaron Ekblad, the No. 1 pick in the 2014 NHL Draft, scored his second career goal late in the third period to help the Panthers earn a point in a 4-3 shootout loss to the New York Islanders on Friday. Ekblad has nine points and is plus-1 in 14 games. He has played more than 20 minutes in all but two games and in five straight. The Panthers could get back some injured players on the trip. Forwards Brandon Pirri (concussion), Sean Bergenheim (lower body) and Dave Bolland (groin) and defenseman Dmitry Kulikov (knee) all flew west, according to the Miami Herald. After this game, the Panthers will head up the freeway to play the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday before facing the San Jose Sharks on Thursday and the Nashville Predators next Saturday.
