NHL-Leading Ducks Host Surging Rangers at Honda Center
RANGERS (21-11-4) at DUCKS (26-9-6)
TV: NBCSN, MSG+
The Latest: The NHL-leading Anaheim Ducks (26-9-6, 58 pts.) enter the second half of the season Wednesday when they take on the New York Rangers at Honda Center (7:30 p.m. PST, NBCSN/AM 830). The Ducks concluded the first half leading the league in standings points and co-leading in wins with the second-best first-half record in club history (behind only 28-8-5 in 2013-14). The team has won two straight games (2-0-0), gone 3-1-0 in the first four games of a season-high eight-game homestand, have points in five of the last six games (4-1-1), are 12-3-1 in their last 16 and 15-5-1 in their last 21. In addition, the Ducks have won seven of their last eight games at Honda Center (7-1-0).
The Ducks are in the midst of 36-of-37 days within Southern California (beginning Dec. 20 through Jan. 25). The homestand also features visits from Winnipeg (Jan. 11), Toronto (Jan. 14) and New Jersey (Jan. 16). This marks Anaheim's longest stretch of consecutive home games since March 2-23, 2007, when the club went 6-1-1 in a similar eight-game homestand.
The Game of One: The Ducks have matched an NHL record for most consecutive home wins by a one-goal margin (discounting losses or ties), established in 2010-11 by Colorado and tied earlier this season by Nashville (Elias Sports Bureau). Anaheim's last 10 home wins have all been by one goal (five regulation, two overtime and three shootouts). Overall, seventeen of the club's last 19 victories have been one-goal games dating to a 1-0 win on Oct. 28 at Chicago, including eight decided in extra time (four overtime, four shootout). Each of the Ducks' last five overall wins has been a one-goal margin since Dec. 18 in Montreal. The club's 12 straight wins by one goal from Oct. 28-Dec. 10 were the most in the NHL since Atlanta had 14 in 2010-11. The Ducks lead the NHL with 20 wins in one-goal games (20-0-6) and are the only NHL team without a regulation loss in a game decided by one goal. Anaheim also ranks second among NHL teams for winning percentage in one-goal games (.769). Since the beginning of the 2012-13 season, the Ducks have posted a 61-6-20 record in one-goal games, owning the top record in the NHL by points percentage (.816).
Ducks-Rangers: Anaheim and the New York Rangers play the first game of a two-game season series tonight at Honda Center. The Ducks have won the last two games vs. the Rangers and two straight in Anaheim. All-time, the Ducks own a 16-6-5 record vs. the Rangers and an 8-2-2 home record. The Ducks last hosted the Rangers on Oct. 10, 2013, a 6-0 Anaheim victory. Corey Perry's nine points (5g/4a) in 10 career games vs. the Rangers lead all active Anaheim skaters. The season series will conclude on March 22 at Madison Square Garden.
Ducks team scope: Anaheim defeated the Nashville Predators 4-3 in a shootout Sunday and leads the NHL in points with 58. Perry scored his first goal since returning from a knee injury. The Ducks are 3-1-0 on their season-high eight-game homestand that continues Wednesday against the Rangers. "They're one of the top teams, and really tough to play," said Ducks forward Jakob Silfverberg. "They've got some really quick guys who can really skate with the puck, and they have skilled D and a great goalie so it will be a good measurement for us."
"This is a very good team in both the NHL and the East, and we measure ourselves every night," said Ducks defensemanBen Lovejoy, no stranger to the Rangers from his time with the Pittsburgh Penguins. "We want to be the best team in the league. We want to win every night, and this is a very good test for us."
Adds Ducks head coach Bruce Boudreau, "We firmly believe they are as good as any team in the league, and we'll have to be at our utmost best to stay with them."
Rangers team scope: New York defeated the Buffalo Sabres 6-1 on Saturday, scoring on three consecutive power plays in the first period. The Rangers have won 10 of their past 11 games and begin a three-game California road trip in four days against the Ducks. The Rangers will play the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday and the San Jose Sharks on Saturday. New York is 8-6-1 on the road and 4-1-0 against the Pacific Division. Goalie Henrik Lundqvist (18-8-3, 2.35 goals-against average, .914 save percentage) will make his sixth-straight start and defenseman John Moore will play in place of Matt Hunwick, the Rangers said. Forward Derek Stepan has 11 points in eight games (four goals, seven assists).
