General Penguins Game Thread, 2021-2022

Since my last post, Pens hit a low point by getting crushed 6-1 by New Jersey, only to get back-to-back, one goal wins vs the Rags and Blue Jackets. After three straight losses, good to win those two.

Crazy game vs Tampa tonight. 2-0 Pens after one period that featured a Kris Letang fight. Only his 10th in his career.
Bellemare scored early in the second to make it 2-1, but Brock McGinn scored on a breakaway near the end of the second to make it 3-1 after two.
Oh, and the last minute featured a huge scrum that resulted in Bryan Rust getting a misconduct, Corey Perry a roughing minor, and Cooper get tossed for misconduct, resulting in a Pens 5 on 3 PP. Need to finish it off to start the third.

Oops, I got the above slightly wrong. Apparently Corey Perry got TWO roughing minors, Anthony Cirelli got one, and Rust and Friedman each got one for roughing as well. Then Cooper got tossed after first getting a two-minute penalty for abusing the officials. So the 5-on-3 resulted from Perry's second and Cooper's abuse.

Pens didn't score on the ensuing PP, but then Malkin went beast mode, knocking a couple of Bolt forwards to the ice with hard checks, then finishing his shift with a breakaway goal to make it 4-1. The Bolts pulled Vasilevskiy with over six minutes left, only for Jake Guentzel to score an empty netter to end the scoring. 5-1 Pens. And oh yeah, Anthony Cirelli got a 10-minute misconduct when he squared off with Dominik Simon, who got his own 10-minute misconduct.

Winners of three in a row, two against top sides in the Rangers and Bolts, the Pens follow up the trip to Tampa with a trip to the PNC in Raleigh to play the best team (by points) in the East, the Carolina Hurricanes.

Malkin needs to be in super-beast mode again tonight, and I'd like to see Sid in the points column again. But I'd really be happier with a 1-0 win, a goal scored by someone like Evan Rodrigues, and Jarry and the D in full lockdown mode again.

BTW, the Pens have one point less than last season's aborted season in the same number of games.

In the second of back-to-back games for both teams they have both decided to start their #2 goaltenders: Casey DeSmith for the Pens, and Antti Raanta for the Canes.

Tough loss tonight. Owned the first 20 minutes. Sid with a ridiculous assist for the first and scored the second. After that? Too much Canes, not enough smart play (ridiculous turnovers) and only Casey's great netminding kept us from losing in regulation.
That said, that call against Letang in OT ticked me off! I know refs often miss the initial penalty and catch the retaliation. But you're looking at it, ref! Do your job and make the call!

Tough part of schedule continues as Pens host the Florida Panthers.

Pens drop their second straight one goal game, this time 4-3. Down 2-0 after one, they scored two nine seconds apart in the second. Florida retakes lead four minutes later (yet another PP conceded) scores an insurance goal in the third, then weathers the last two minutes and change following a Crosby goal.
Like I've repeatedly said, this team isn't built for much of a playoff run. 😔

Good recovery win vs Vegas on Friday. Three third period goals did the trick. Mark Friedman scored his first goal in ten months to retake the lead and Evan Rodrigues scored an empty netter his first in a minute. Tristan Jarry stopped 40 shots for the win.

Pens beat the Canes 4-2 today. Brian Boyle with a goal and assist, Zach Aston-Reese with his first goal in 34 games, Sid extended his point streak to 9 games (and became first Pen to have 14 20+ goal seasons).
But the story of the game? Tristan Jarry, stopping 41 of 43 shots (one of those a 6-on-5 as they sought to overcome a two goal deficit.) Second straight 40+ save game. The ice was tilted one way in the third in particular, as the Canes outshot the Pens 20-5

This past week, the Pens got hammered by the Preds in Nashville (4-1) then won a shoot out vs the Blues in St. Louis (3-2). Tonight, they play the Coyotes in Arizona before returning home Tuesday vs Columbus.

Pens outshot Arizona 49-21, but until Geno scored with 7 1/2 mins to go it was 1-1, even with more than 2X the ice time in the offensive zone.
But then Crosby added a third with 3 1/2 mins to go, and he added an empty-netter to make the final 4-1. Phew!

Good win in the only home game for a bit. Down 1-0 after one, team erupted for 4 in the second (two by Jake Guentzel) before Malkin closed the scoring in the third. 5-1 Penguin win.

Overtime shootout loss tonight, in Buffalo vs the Sabres. Ugh! 😔 Down 1-0, 2-1, and 3-2, they came back each time, twice on PP goals.
The scorers were the usual suspects, which bugged me: Crosby, Malkin and Letang. Need more from the bottom six.

Pens got hammered by the Rags tonight, 5-1. New York scored three goals in the first in just over two minutes, before the game was five minutes old. Jarry got pulled in second after giving up #4, only to go back in when Casey DeSmith got hurt colliding with Brian Dumoulin.
If that was a playoff preview as was touted by many in the Burgh, we're getting swept. 🙄

Pens thrashed the Red Wings 11-2 today. 2-0 after one was no foreshadowing of the offensive explosion to come. Everyone in the lineup except Dumoulin and Pettersen had at least a point. Malkin's hat trick led the way.

Well I knew the Pens overdid it on Sunday. Tonight, they scored only two vs the Rags and lost 3-2. Hey, at this was closer than the last time out, right?
