Habs are #1 in the NHL

The folks at FiveThirtyEight.com ran the numbers using Google search frequency to determine franchise popularity across North America

Habs were #1 in the NHL, ahead of the Leafs. Canucks and Bruins were a distant 3rd and 4th. I've pasted the chart below.

But what I found way more interesting is when they jumbled all the leagues together -- MLB, NFL, NBA. NHL, CFL, MLS, LigaMX.

Even though the NFL was by far the most popular of the big 4 leagues, the Habs were still more popular than 19 NFL teams. That's incredible relative strength.

Good news for Count. Cowboys were the the most popular NFL team (3rd overall as the Yanks-Red Sox were 1-2, baseball outliers) The NFL has 12 of the top 17 teams.

Even better news for worm, Saskatchewan Roughriders were the top CFL team and despite the regional obscurity of Canadian pigskin, the Roughriders ranked ahead of 8 NHL teams, including the Ducks, Lightning and Blues.

Here's the multi-sport chart, followed by the NHL only version.

Does it add the term HABS to when people search for the Canadiens? Because there are times people might just search for Habs and not canadiens, thus making the Canadiens lower ranked.

Thats a good point. Leafs are leafs... Canadiens are Habs as well... if not more. I remember a poll from TSN a while back that confirmed Montreal had the largest fan base. For the likes of me cannot find it anymore. Anyone want to know why Teams like Toronto make so much money... called very over inflated ticket pricing. 1) Toronto Maple Leafs – Avg Price: $368.60 (up 14% from last year)

2) Chicago Blackhawks – Avg Price: $313.18 (up 57%)

3) Winnipeg Jets – Avg Price: $276.69 (down 19%)

4) Edmonton Oilers – Avg Price: $272.75 (up $71)

5) Vancouver Canucks – Avg Price: $265.48 (9% increase)

6) Calgary Flames – Avg Price: $262.10 (up $25)

7) Montreal Canadiens – Avg Price: $257.06 (up 10%)

8) New York Rangers – Avg Price: $232.93 (down 6%)

9) Boston Bruins – Avg Price: $222.53 ($62 increase)

10) Pittsburgh Penguins – Avg Price: $203.93 (5% cheaper)

Silver is generally right about the "competition" factor in the US and Europe. It's bizarro world. North American teams are "franchises"... tightly controlled, New-York based cartels. The Black Sox scandal was a defining moment.

The business of European soccer has generally been Darwinian and dog-eat-dog. They just don't want to beat the other teams, they want to destroy them. That has changed a bit, the English league is a lot more profession/polished. Again, it took scandal/disaster (massive stadium fatalities and violence) to trigger changes (and satellite TV to China) :smile(21):

our ticket prices are too low then. Ours should be at worst 3rd highest.

Chicago is hilarious, they are raping their fans now after years when they couldn't give tickets away

Hard to believe we are ahead of the Colts and Dolphins, that's 2 pretty popular NFL teams. And the Knicks too! Wow!, how low have the Knicks fallen.

Dolphins had a decent run with Marino but since then, they have been a wasteland, basically get no press and are totally a regional team.
