Habs Season Thread: 2023-24 Season

Da fuk all line still shut down Crosby, Malkin, Giroux, Voracek. He's worth it, just like Carbo would have been worth it in a cap world, but because of the cap, I'm not sure how to fit him. I prefer Danault at 5 than Byron and Edmundson at 3.4 and 3.5. i don't like 6 years though, i don't see his game aging well value wise.

Exactly , I don’t see him aging well either

So why overpay for a 3C with term

He needs the Toffoli contract to stay here

Carbo is one of the greatest defensive forwards of all time who still produced solid numbers

Dano isn’t in the same league

Another reason why the contract isn't comparable: Couturier was a 23 year old in the middle of his second contract that would have brought him to RFA status.

Danault is a soon-to-be 28 year old, pending UFA.

Different situations.

By the way, Brandon Sutter got a similar deal to Couturier and while the deal wasn't good, it's gotten better due to the cap going higher. Kinda similar to Mathieu Perreault. Another comparable: Jordan Staal, although Carolina foolishly paid him thinking he'd be a #2 center.

Sutter and Perreault are junk . Perrault has been on the block ever since he signed .

Good point about Staal though but the comparisons are not even close .

Staal put up second line numbers and had a 25 goal 50 point in 62 games finale season at 23 in Pitt

At this size and 2 way play , you could see the temptation for Carolina to nab him with future upside in mind

Couturier only exceeded his contract the last 3 years , didn’t happen right away

But he is a much better player than Dano and had more upside

So now Dano wants the 6 mil at 28 with no upside and most likely will need to settle for a lesser role and he won’t age well .

The other examples and many more in this league were much younger players with upside .

We are handing out big raises to aging players whose game is only going to go south .

Couturier signed his contract almost 6 years ago and has greatly exceeded his contract. It's not comparable.
Yup and Couturier at the time was a 3rd line shutdown C & PK specialist....then moved up to 1C 3-years ago. Not at all a comparable.

Also, Danault wants $5.5M x 6, MB offering $5M x 5, they’ll likely settle halfway ($5.2M x 6) in exchange for no trade protection clauses the final couple of years IMO.

In 3-4 seasons the cap will have skyrocketed, forcing salaries to jump as well.

So Danault played 11 minutes on Thursday cause there was a chance he could be traded, then his minutes were boosted to over 15 when the trade was off.

The guy with Caufield in his name is super-pumped we didn't trade Caufield. Color me shocked.

I don't believe that report for a second, though.

We don't have "minor pieces" we could have given to match the salary cap.
