Habs Season Thread: 2024-25 Regular Season

But they are expected to celebrate the military and wear camouflage warm-up jerseys and not kneel for the anthem because "shut up and dribble"?

It seems to me that the people who are saying that Provorov should be able to do or not do whatever he wants are the same ones who's heads would explode if a player refused to participate in a salute to the military or the cops or chose not to stand for the anthem. They're very selective about how they feel people should express their opinions and which people should get a pass and which shouldn't.

If I was NHL Commish, every team in the league would have a Ukrainian flag patch on their uniforms and any Russkie player who didn't like it could fuck off back to Russia. At some point you have to decide what you stand for and no, you can't just ignore or both sides the invasion of the Ukraine. The Russians are the bad guys, full stop, and if I'm running the NHL that country is cut off until it learns how to play nice in the sandbox.

It's a good thing that Jackie Robinson integrated baseball back in the 40's because if he were doing that today and Mike Trout decided he wasn't down with it MLB would just cave and say "Oh well, I guess baseball isn't ready".
Cmon , sexual orientation vs the cops , front line workers , or military is a different shite

Teams will honour vets who fought in the war near Nov 11 day. That has nothing to do with player scrutiny

YUP
Politics plays out in sport.
It always has.
And once upon a time pro sports would use its clout to help lead the fight for progress. Integrating baseball made integration in general a lot more palatable to a lot more people.

Today sports doesn't lead. It just sticks its finger in the air to see which way the wind is blowing and follows along half-heartedly, looking for an opportunity to cash in. But when push comes to shove they don't have the courage of their supposed convictions because they cave at the first sign of resistance. Ivan Provorov is a fucking nobody. But the league rolled over and played dead for him because Bettman has no spine.

I'm not talking about Nov. 11th. I'm talking about "Salute to the Military Night" sponsored by the US Army, where players wear camo warm-up jerseys and the entire evening is just one big recruitment ad wrapped in jingoism. These big military displays you see at sporting events (especially football) aren't instigated by the leagues, they are bought and paid for by the military. It's advertising. It's not about charity like Hockey Fights Cancer or an awareness campaign like Hockey is for Everyone.

And I'm quite sure that had any player in any sport refused to take part in the military wank-fest we'd have heard about it because the same newly-minted free speech absolutists currently applauding Provorov would be the same people calling for the head of whatever player refused to be stuck on a pike.

Yeah, it’s a horrible comparison by WeHave.

Yeah, I'm sure everyone would want more than a journey with the tenth overall pick and unless you pick the best player in the draft, there's always going to be the usual, "Yeah well X player and Y player went right after him!"... But if you draft someone 10th and he'll play nearly 900 games in the NHL? And only 18 players in his draft class played more than him? Sorry, that's not a bust. The same way every time you redo a draft and some journeyman player ends up being the 25th best player in that draft.

Take the 2007 draft. Brandon Sutter went 11th, Ryan McDonagh went 12th, Lars Eller 13th, Kevin Shattenkirk 14th. While all are (or were for Sutter before Covid wrecked his life) inching closer & closer to 1,000 games played, they've had different levels of success.

Sutter isn't a bust just because McDonagh was drafted just after him, the same way Eller & Shattenkirk aren't busts because Perron & Max Pacioretty were taken in the 20s.

What happened to Sutter?
