Not one person here has stated Dubois over elite talent ever. Nobody here thinks you can be a perennial contender without elite talent.

Most here see contingency plans. Most.

Perfect is the enemy of good. Every time you can improve the team you should do it. While we need elite players, we also need a solid top 9. PLD just gives us so many options with the roster, play him with Suzuki and Caufield, or allow Dach to be in that spot, play him with Dach, or have a killer 3 centers lineup. It would be a nice problem to have too many good forwards. Not saying we should go all in on him, but he’s a nice piece of the puzzle to add.

I’ll admit, the gnawing concern is that he becomes the next Drouin. Local boy signs and lays a multi-year egg. It’s not rational, I fully admit that. But then again, all long term deals are fraught with term risk.
 
I wish there was a clear definition of 1st line centre, dman and winger. I swear when I read online about those positions, there aren't 32 of each in the NHL.

It's valid albeit mutually exclusive.

My concern is this, if you can get PLD relatively cheap (Panthers pick is as high as I'd go and after #12) you do it. If you wait for UFA you run the risk of an idiot GM thinking he is elite or the missing piece and offering him more than you're willing to pay. As an RFA you hold the cards and can offer the 8th year as opposed to only 7.
