Habs Season Thread: 2024-25 Regular Season

A no brainer deal for Pitt , poker chips already in the middle of the table ......finish them all

Pitt isnt rebuilding and cant get cap space to make a difference while their big 3 are still in their prime
Yep. Try hard for a couple of years to hold the old guys can turn back the clock and then rebuild.

They shouldn't be trading any later first rounders though.

Depends if hot Karl is mvp level again or back to his regular self.
He could be at the peak of his powers, Pittsburgh still isn't beating Carolina, Tampa Bay or even Toronto, honestly. They're a top-heavy team with all of the "top" players past their prime, Karlsson included.

Last year' Penguins team wasn't great and I don't think Karlsson's going to be the one to put them over.

Which is funny because GGpX is always about taking advantage of cap space for the Habs rebuild
Karlsson's $11.5M caphit wouldn't have prevented San Jose from inheriting another bad contract or two. Keeping or losing that $11.5M is virtually irrelevant because it wouldn't have prevented them from doing anything.

They have 8 players who are UFAs next summer. I doubt they'll get much of anything for anyone besides Kevin Labanc. They can trade him and get more cap space.

Also, what I want versus reality are two different things. No team besides Arizona has taken full advantage of using their extra capspace to inherit bad contracts in return for picks/prospects. Some teams have done it here & there, like we did with Mason & Monahan, Chicago with Mrazek & Zaitsev, but besides Arizona? It's a rare instance.

2 years ago the narrative was that SJ was fucked and would never be able to get rid of this contract and now it’s oh they just got a first round pick in return. He did have an amazing season but the previous 4 had been rough. He’s not without risk.

Karlsson has been down for basically his whole time in SJ. Everything went right for him, but I think everyone pretty much knows that was a one year rejuvenation. He got more points last year than the previous 3 combined. Sure, it's 100 point Hall of Fame d-man dealt for nothing, but it's the kind of deal you need to do to gain the future flexibility.

Assuming San Jose has kept Karlsson, what future flexibility were they losing out on because of his contract?

San Jose's not a competing team with a disgruntled superstar. They're bottom feeders with a prospect pool that doesn't really inspire confidence.

With or without Karlsson, they're going to be pretty bad for a while. Chicago-levels of bad is coming their way.

Who knows where they are in 4 years. Karlsson's value isn't going up in all likelihood.

It does kind of feel like a good trade for all 3 teams. Pittsburgh gets the best player, and can try for a last few runs with their core. Even if EK isn't worth his deal, it's not like he was bad in any year in SJ and should still be productive as long as he can stay healthy.
SJ clears future space. If they could have moved him at the deadline they probably could have gotten more, but there's a very limited market for him.
MTL clears out some dead space, and gets some assets back.

Yeah, did Pittsburgh buy at the peak of the market?

If so, kudos to Grier.
They very well might have.

But I don't see any real downside for them either way. If Karlsson stays like he was last season, they added the best offensive d-man in the league. And if he doesn't? They gave up a first & second round pick on a very interesting gamble.

Pittsburgh's built around an aging core trying to win now. They needed to find an impact player. They traded for a player without giving any relevant assets, this was a must for them.

You'd rather they keep hot Karl?

Trading 11m in long term cap is extremely difficult. I'm kinda shocked they were able to do it and get assets. Having hot Karl helps they win trade lottos and they got a first.
They have limited cap relief for the next 2 years and have half a cap thats terrible

Team is 3-4 years away from anything

Eat 4 mil and make a better hockey trade for legit future assets , not this package of crap.

You can move a contract if your creative , Sharks were too reluctant to eat more cap which would not affect anything down the road

Pissed away the best opportunity to move him after that incredible year

Exactly , team was shit for 3-4 years with or without EK

At least the Hawks dont have all those albatross contracts on their books

The market was limited because Grier shrunk the suitors

He's too good for a tanking team. How many points in the standings last year did Karlsson directly give them?
