Habs Season Thread: 2024-25 Regular Season

Athletic with a nice piece today on whether Suzuki/Cole are the key pieces of a contender or just nice pieces. They both have a lot of work to do in their own end.
And that's the problem the Habs have.

I started writing something about this last night, never ended up finishing. But the Habs are in a real procarious position with Suzuki/Caufield/Dach being their three best forwards for the near and medium future.

We don't have a prayer of being legitimate contenders year over year if those are our core forwards.

Long rebuild because we got the #1 pick one year too soon.

I agree but it is what it is

Unfortunately even when we get draft luck there is no CMD, Matthews , etc....

The Habs had fuck all to work with for a decade upfront , at least now there is something and its young to work with for many years

Can Nick be a top 15-20 C and get 75+ points ?

Can Cole be DaBrincat and get 40 a year ?

Can Dach be a # 2 C or at last a 60 point top 6 player ?

Ideally you want to be the Blues or Vegas , super deep top 9 and depth throughout their line up

ROR went ape shit and looked like Sid for 2 months but is that Bergeron 2 way beast defender

Unfortunately when the season starts 18-20 teams have no shot at the cup

Well...

I think it has more to do with picking the wrong player.

It's early, but I'd be much more confident if we had a blue line with a potential top-4 of Jiricek, Reinbacher, Hutson and Guhle. That could be, had we taken Jiricek over Slafkovsky, four of the 6 on D starting next training camp.

We've got one or two more kicks at the can in the basement. If we can't find a #1 center or a potentially #1 d-man in those years, the probabilities won't be on our side.

Slaf can still be a very solid piece. Not too worried about Jiricek. Lots of good D this draft, tho it’d be nice to win the lotto again and grab Celebrini

I place much more value in an excellent d-man than an excellent winger, though.

I mean, if we had those 4 d-men, we're set on the blueline for the next decade.

This year, Celebrini or Eiserman would be nice. I'd be beyond thrilled with Sam Dickinson as well. Don't know all that much about this class beyond those three.

Rest of the class has fewer so called , " cant miss to be a good player "

One theory I heard is that Slafkovsky was viewed as a multi-draft unicorn due to his size… a unique case for 2022 and 2023. So they took him. Dunno if that’s real or not.

Wright has flaws or he would go # 1

Dont think they wanted a smaller center in Cooley

They drafted the unicorn , not many 6`4' 235 pound skilled wingers in this league

They are banking on having that freak of nature be a star ...time will tell

As CHI mentioned , first time in years a " project work in progress player " went numero uno

2022 was a crapshoot with no obvious elite prospects. All the prospects had bunch of risks and unknowns. There was no safe and obvious pick. Slafkovsky had a fantastic draft year and was the consensus #1 pick with a slim margin. Jiricek might be the best player out of the draft but he fell to #6 (where he was ranked) for reasons.
