Habs Season Thread: 2024-25 Regular Season

Personally, I wouldn't report to Laval if I was Norlinder.

Career wise it makes no sense. He's already fallen in the depth chart, he doesn't have a style that works in North AMerican hockey, and he'd be making a ton more playing back home in Sweden.

Personally, if the Habs wanted to give me another shot to develop as an NHLer, I would take it.
Sweden can wait another year

But that's the thing, the NHL's not really there for him.

His hopes of making it to the NHLer were dashed last September when Xhekaj and Harris passed him on the depth chart.

By the end of last season, Trudeau passed him and Struble is probably ahead of him too. There's no realistic path for him.

there are other teams in the NHL if he can't crack the Habs

...that are looking to pick and choose depth AHL d-men from the organization that has one of the weakest crop of d-men?

I do not share your optimism.

you give up too quickly...can't succeed with that attitude

Problem is he is that Euro D tweener

Small , finesse and weak defender

These players need to be dynamic point producers and thats not him

Most teams have these types or you take a chance on a free agent in his mid 20`s

I don't give up quickly at all.

But at 23, the vast majority of players are what they are. Like, upwards of 95% & higher.

If the player's good enough to be in the NHL, he'd be there by now or at the very least, kipping at the heels. It's be one thing if the NHL team didn't have room for him because they're contenders, but we're a bottom-feeding team. Norlinder's probably 5th or 6th on the LHD depth chart at the pro level now with the recent draft picks coming in the AHL.

Be honest: What are the realistic hopes that he makes it to the NHL at this point in his career?

It's like with Ylonen. There's almost assuredly no future for him in the league. If they still can't make it at their age, on this roster, with the amount of opportunities available, when will they? Those who might have an NHL future, such as Harvey-Pinard, have already passed them. Wouldn't surprise me if Roy & Davidson pass Ylonen on the depth chart by the end, or even middle, of the year too.

We got Kovacevic on waivers last year from the Jets. The Jets have a dreadful defense and they didn't have place for him. He played 77 games for us.

I’m not saying he’s gonna make it, I’m saying that unlike you, I wouldn’t rush to Sweden before I had to if I were in his shoes

Not sure who will give him a shot to earn a league minimum instead of a prorated AHL/NHL gig

Sweden will always be there at a decent salary and easier schedule

Never been a huge fan of Norlinder, but he did make significant strides in Laval last season (stick work to break up plays in neutral / Dzone has really improved)… can’t rule out further progression

IMO one of the side reasons Lias Andersson was signed was to make Norlinder feel more comfortable… having a fellow Swede around

With d-men you never know which ones are going to pan out and which ones are going to stagnate. In the mid-2000's we had a bunch that we thought were expendable, so we lost a bunch of guys like Beauchemin, Hainsey, Robidas, etc. for nothing.

So he should stay in the AHL for how long until the sudden realization that he won't make it? This year? Okay, why not an extra year beyond that? Or another two years? Why not until he's 30? I mean, there's always a chance he could make it, right?

The truth is, he's almost guaranteed that he won't make it and he's making less money than if he played in Europe.

At a certain point, the dream's over.

He can choose when to wake up from the dream, unlike an actual dream.
