Habs Season Thread: 2024-25 Regular Season

So he should stay in the AHL for how long until the sudden realization that he won't make it? This year? Okay, why not an extra year beyond that? Or another two years? Why not until he's 30? I mean, there's always a chance he could make it, right?

The truth is, he's almost guaranteed that he won't make it and he's making less money than if he played in Europe.

At a certain point, the dream's over.

You’re making me laugh now. Did you base this hysterical polemic on the Chris Farley motivational speaker character?

“go back home, son, otherwise you’ll end up living in a van down by the St Lawrence”

Btw, he has one year left on his NHL deal, so barring some parabolic spike in his game (or a horrible camp that leaves him in tears) he will most likely be in Sweden next season knowing that he gave his NHL dream max time to play out

It's really nothing out of the ordinary for a person in their early 20's to give up a few tens of thousands of dollars to "chase the dream", instead of it being backpacking through Europe or teaching English in Asia, it's to play hockey in Canada and possibly make the NHL.

I don't give up quickly at all.

But at 23, the vast majority of players are what they are. Like, upwards of 95% & higher.

If the player's good enough to be in the NHL, he'd be there by now or at the very least, kipping at the heels. It's be one thing if the NHL team didn't have room for him because they're contenders, but we're a bottom-feeding team. Norlinder's probably 5th or 6th on the LHD depth chart at the pro level now with the recent draft picks coming in the AHL.

Be honest: What are the realistic hopes that he makes it to the NHL at this point in his career?

It's like with Ylonen. There's almost assuredly no future for him in the league. If they still can't make it at their age, on this roster, with the amount of opportunities available, when will they? Those who might have an NHL future, such as Harvey-Pinard, have already passed them. Wouldn't surprise me if Roy & Davidson pass Ylonen on the depth chart by the end, or even middle, of the year too.

We got Kovacevic on waivers last year from the Jets. The Jets have a dreadful defense and they didn't have place for him. He played 77 games for us.
You’re a bit harsh with the 23 cut off, many players nowadays blooms up a bit later. And Ylonen-Norlinder cases are quite different. Ylonen actually has been following a pretty standard path for a bottom forward, get a few call ups your first year in the pros, start next season in the minors, establish yourself as one of the best forwards there then finish the year in the majors. I don’t quite see the issue in his case unless you were expecting a top 6 forward.

Norlinder got no callups and was not even a top 3 defenseman in Laval, or show the offense that would help him have some value.

Ironically Kovacevic is a counter example of your argument. Established himself in the majors at 25 after spending 3 full years in the minors. He was an example of a guy just needing a chance.

The kids need to get their time on Laval, junior or Yurp. They showed nice flashes from time to time in the game against NJ, but they need way more ice time.

Pretty significant tribute to a guy who, in 3 years of junior hockey with the Granby Bisons, posted GAA's of 6.26, 4.44, and 5.55 (for a QMJHL career average of 5.35) in 159 games. His career save percentage was .863, good for 228th best in QMJHL history. In fact, the only stat in which Roy finished in the top 10 all time was penalty minutes, where he's in 9th place with 103.
