Habs Season Thread: 2024-25 Regular Season

Hab fans will need some hope — if it’s not wins it’ll have to be getting their hands on a clear cut potential forward superstar, which we have yet to do despite drafting #1 and #5.
Even w that patience will be limited because said asset will be overhyped and expectations will mushroom to unachievable levels that knives will come out once again.

need only ask the old timers how everyone wanted The Flower dealt after 2-years of being drafted @ 20-years of age

that's why we should have started tanking 5 years ago

Yes. But now what? It looks like they are trying to partly fix those wasted years with Dach- and Newhook-like trades. We’re trying to build a a deeper team, if not with elite top line players. I suspect we may see another move to bring in a younger-than-Suzuki NHL player while the purge of bad contracts continues.

For the draft, I don’t see us getting into the top 3 for the next couple years unless we fluke out with ping pong or make a very costly trade.

Hope Beck becomes a reincarnation of Bergeron, Mesar / Krejci, Hutson / Fox / McAvoy, and/or they’ve somehow managed to snag a Marchand / Pastrnak in their picks

2003: Fleury, Staal, Horton
2004: Ovy, Malkin, Barker
2005: Crosby, Ryan, J.Johnson
2006: E.Johnson, J.Staal, Toews
2007: Kane, JVR, Turris
2008: Stamkos, Doughty, Bogosian
2009: Tavares, Hedman, Duchene
2010: Hall, Seguin, Gundbranson
2011: RNH, Landeskog, Huberdeau
2012: Yakupov, Murray, Galchenyuk
2013: MacKinnon, Barkov, Drouin
2014: Ekblad, Reinhart, Draisaitl
2015: McDavid, Eichel, D.Strome
2016: Matthews, Laine, PLD
2017: Hischier, Patrick, Heiskanen
2018: Dahlin, Svechnikov, KK
2019: Hughes, Kaako, Dach

IF “extremely successful” = 1st line / 1st pairing

Almost every draft from 2003-2019 (inclusive) has at least one player in top-3 who failed to meet that criteria (see bold), and I was generous in some cases (E.Johnson, J.Staal in 2006, JVR in 2007, Makar vs Hischier in 2017 etc.) - roughly 30-of-51 top-3 picks are slam dunks (again being generous) approx 59%

Out of those 17-drafts, 1OA is the undisputed best player in 10-of them (58% of the time)

NHL draft of 18-yr olds is pretty much a crapshoot…not talking 70%+ success rate

New fans are softer — they haven’t seen a Cup in their lifetime

Yep. We need to hit on a Pasta type at 25 or Robertson at 39

Our last over achieving stud was PK Subban at 43

If all we get is close to Jordan Staal , Bjorkstrand , and Spurgeon with those 3 thats great

Your list needs to how many really good players came in the top 7 of each draft

Yup , needed to start selling off 5+ years ago like we did we Max

Major fuckup keeping Price , Gally , Petry and wrong trade for PK
You could argue that we got lucky with Max. Most vet offload, regardless of the quality, to fetch that much value in return.

yeah...I was kidding about tanking too late.

the frustrating part of the process is never landing the big fish...just flawed projects who top out as 2nd liners
KK was self inflicted. The talent was there and obvious.

Ironically our best picks were Caufield (15th) and Guhle(16th).

these deals usually involve a mix of lotto futures and picks that we turn into....middling players
