Even Price I'm his prime wasn't worth all that much on the open market. That's why it was stupid for Bergevin to pay him like he was a 50 goal scorer. Goalies are important but at a certain point their dollar value plateaus.
Goalie contracts are like buying an acreage. If you buy 5 acres, the 1 acre that surrounds your house is what costs money. The other 4 acres are just "more acres" and they ain't worth much. Likewise, paying more than 5 or 6 million for an elite level goalie is just "more money", largely to no purpose. Goals are simply more valuable than saves.
