Habs Season Thread: 2024-25 Regular Season

I'm not saying we should trade Hutson. But don't be shocked if he can't do half the things he's doing now when he gets to the bigs. You can say that Caufield has defied the odds but he isn't a defenseman. I will be very interested to see how a guy as small as Hutson is going to manage.
I’m more interested in watching how MSL & Hughes gameplan Hutson into their position less concept… that will be the game changer

And it's not a bit early to call him mediocre?

Never said that….. marginal not mediocre

All prospects are considered marginal unless they’ve been identified as having a specific elite skill / toolset, which is why they get drafted early - that doesn’t mean those players are guaranteed success @ NHL level, just as marginal prospects still become very good NHLers.

He needs a WIFI size sidekick who plays D and clears the crease

Hopefully he can be a QB1 PP stud

How are you all feeling about the season so far? The team is battling but on an individual level it’s a lot of meh. Normally there is a few surprises and a few let downs but there hasn’t been a lot of surprises this year besides of Strubble and it seems like everyone one else is struggling. Even in a rebuilding year we should normally be expecting some bright spots I think. Curious about other people perspectives.

IMO team has hit or exceeded expectations

Nearly 30 games in Habs are 5 out of a WC spot , what more can anyone expect

I think we can safely say Nick is what he is , a good 60-65 point C which is fine

My hope was Cole to be the next DaBrincat but might be a 25-30 goal player which is fine

D has held up with injuries and Guhle , Struble , Barron have played well

Simply put team has no front line talent and nothing on the horizon

Need one more year to flush out the excess waste and hope by 2025 team can start looking at a more realistic playoff team

It is what it is , decades of patching finally ran its course

Goals from the D have basically saved the team's ass, otherwise they would be closer to the bottom. When Dach got injured , the season was basically over.

It’s seems they intend to build from the blue line, so Struble’s emergence is interesting. Not because he’s a Norris candidate, but more because it seems apparent they will be able to fill out a legitimate 1-6 over the next couple of years and they will have assets (LHD) to move. Guhle has been ropey in last few games, but is clearly a fixture. D is still a bit shaky, but you can see contours of a top notch group in a few years.

Forwards… ugh. Suzuki is who he is. A good centre, but not elite. Caulfield is said to rounding out the “rest of his game”, but it would be nice if he potted a few more. Slafkovsky looks promising, but isn’t delivering yet. Newhook was a decent surprise, so his injury is a bummer. Dach’s injury is a massive bummer, kinda ruined the season a little bit frankly. The other forwards are either trade bait or irrelevant.

Which brings us to the trade bait… the Habs have a lot of veterans, draft picks, some cap space and LHD. So, I fully expect HuGo to make a couple of significant long term moves before next year’s training camp. Apart from the kids getting better, this is the other thing I expect to see.

Last year Cole was on pace for 40 easy, this year not so much. Too early to tell what his average will be but I think it will be north of 30, possibly even high 30’s.

I can see Hugo trying another reclamation Dach project type trade

Team desperately needs 3-4 yutes to come through and exceed expectations and find more skill in the draft

Slaf with a bit of luck could of had 10 goals by now .

Habs record w vs without Savard last season is shocking. It was at this point a year ago Savard was lost due to injury followed by Monahan and everything fell off a cliff

Probability of repeating is very low, combined with extreme parity in Atlantic division (who will without a doubt end up w 5-teams in the playoffs)… Habs will be in a wildcard hunt till at least trade deadline if not entire season

No

Habs as a whole are doing ok. Just not seeing a lot of progression on an individual level, besides Slaf and Struble. I saw some improvements in Caufield and Anderson but both are scoring way less. Suzuki is about the same. Guhle is about the same. Not a lot of wow going on.
