Habs Season Thread: 2024-25 Regular Season

Montreal is not Calgary in many ways, taxation rates being just one. Montreal is the highest-taxed NHL city or at least in the top 3.
Even signing in Mtl, Stamkos w above bonus deal would take home more than any US market

Then there’s the foreign exchange advantage, during his time actually spent in Mtl…

If $ are be all & end all, Cdn market is advantaged

Personally I'm not a big fan of having a star players being here for just a year or two. I want our young guys to have the challenges and big moments, not having the star potentially take it from them. I also feel it would make it more difficult for HuGo to evaluate the team with a guy like Stamkos would will be gone in the future but might change the short term equation.

Guys like Monahan were perfect for the short term transition, assuming a role, providing leadership while not stealing the spotlight from Suzuki.

The foreign exchange is the big bonus for all these players if your here with term

Suzuki is making 10+ in CDN funds , thats a massive gift

At this point, I don't care what is said by people in the organization. Their actions in the last week of June & first week of July will be their real statement.

Yes but so far their words and actions have been consistently in sync.

Sure, but it's easy for them to say after a season where they made no efforts to try have a competitive team, "Well next year we're going to make a push for the playoffs!" knowing damn well this team would need a massive infusion of talent to get there.

Nick pays his house in CDN funds but gets paid in US dollars , big advantage right now.

The creative accountants know how to fix this
Cdn tax system has very limited loopholes. Suzuki’s getting whacked a good 50%

Whereas, Stamkos in scenario outlined @ $12M per year ($11M bonus) would walk away with significantly more in % of take home

With creative financial engineering Nick is doing well and wont pay 50%

If it was a 1:1 exchange he would not benefit

Some deposits go in at 1.25 USA , others may convert at 1.35 or more

He isnt going to a food bank next week

The lack of loopholes compared to the US tax system (which is written by and for the super wealthy) is significant. A US player can join a hoity toity country club and write the membership fee off as a "health benefit", to name but one example. My Planet Fitness membership isn't deductible.

I’m agreeing with you, but I’m going in this summer with trust instead distrust. Doesn’t mean I’ll like every move, but I’m trusting them so far.

RDS commentators (not sure names) said guys like @WeHaveMoreCupsThanYou were only happy this year because they have lowered their expectations so much that losing by a goal is great and we could get a better draft pick by losing.
I have never lowered my expectations. That's why I want a team that can win Cups, not just make the 8th seed. The way we do that is to fuck the fans and burn it to the ground. Be so bad that abandoning the rebuild to try and make the playoffs isn't even a consideration because we're too far behind.

This season we knew in advance that we wouldn't be within shouting distance of 8th place before the games were even played so we were spared from the fear that management would cut the rebuild short.

The expectation is the Cup. It will always be the expectation. I want HuGo building towards that, not building towards a wild card spot.

Didn’t they add Newhook, Roy, Hutson and Struble this past season? At some point next season they’ll add Reinbacher, Logan, possibly Beck, and I’m sure they’ll add players this summer. And Dach will be back, which is probably the biggest add.
