Habs Season Thread: 2024-25 Regular Season

And if he agrees to no nmc the last two years of the contract?

This is actually a discussion I'm having with old friends ( same group as our GM) unfortunately Kent is now too good for us

There's no realistic situation where I'd keep Matheson.

If he wants one of the many options that we all know he'd never even consider (short extension, similar or lower caphit, a mix of both) then sure.

But realistically, he's going to want 5+ years @ $7M+ annually, especially if he keeps this up.

Trade him this season or next off season.

So I have a question for the trade everyone right f'ing now crowd. Matheson is going to be due a big raise in two years. If he's showing little signs of slowing down (like Petry) do you sign him to a five year deal (like Petry) if he gives a good hometown discount like Petry did at the time?

Second question is should he give a discount will TVA trash him anyway?
TRADE 10000%

ultimately…. The return will determine the course of action

Hard to commit to trading/not trading him in a vacuum

This is Petry 2.0

I think you can get a gigantic return for him, especially if you retain 50% of his salary.

This team isn't going to be competitive next year and there's a good chance we'll be close to the lottery once more.

It would be one thing if we're in the middle of competing and we're in a similar situation as Deadmonton with Leon Draisaitl... Unfortunately for us, by the time we're competitive, I don't see how he'll still be as productive as he is now.

At most retain 1 mil , he is the cheap right now

No reason why you cant get a very good prospect and a decent D who can step in right now

I would wait until next year though, 26 draft is much better from what I'm reading.

I don’t want another 26th overall pick kind of deal

Need a ready to play prospect that was drafted a few years ago — like how we got Suzuki + for MaxPac

Besides Gavin McKenna, there's no real way of being able to judge the 2026 draft. Most of those players haven't even started playing Junior yet.

Assuming he's still a 50+ point player, you should be expecting a lot more than a first round pick for a top-4, PMD that gets 50+ points at 50% retained.

I know Winnipeg's not in any position to agree, but a Matheson @ 50% for McGroarty ise xactly what I'd try for.

At his age I don't care what he's producing 2 years from now. Thelma and Louise were showing no signs of slowing down either, until they went off that cliff. When his deal is nearly done, trade him at the deadline.
